Advice Needed

OK, so i ordered some goodridge lines from martin they came fine and very happy with the service.

Following day i go over to see a certain very well known and highly respected "Jap car tuner" down here in leicester to have those fitted along with new pads.

Was very happy with the outcome at the completion point, and brakes were solid for the next few days (had them fitted on thursday)

so today happily go along to martins open day and on the way back was heading to bham pulled over and parked up to wait for someone, and then carried on driving and the brake pedal was going ALL THE WAY to the floor with NO braking power at all.. lucky i was driving slow at this point and lucky it didnt happen on the motorway..

i checked brake fluid and it was very low so bought some more and topped it up - carried on driving and 5 mins later the same thing, this time a cars in front so ive had to pull into the opposite lane which was clear.

just been brought back from the aa and rang the guy who fitted them - it appears he didnt route them right at the rear and the line was resting against my alloy, and has basically cut through the steel and leaking fluid.

He says its not his fault its the brake lines, but its 100% evident hes fitted them wrong as i can see that its leaning against the inside of the rim/tyre.

so i need advice as to what i can do now? i could have had a nasty accident had it not have held out till i got off the motorway.. my bros response is break his legs but is there something i can do legally to get my money back and obviously teach this guy a lesson for doing such a fucked up job?

hes usually fine i know of lots of people who use him but he mainly specialises in skylines etc, but brake lines how can someone fuck up on those? even though he took 4 hours to fit saying "i dont like to mess around with brakes..."

so people, what should i do?

hes not on this forum and has nothing to do with our club, so i dont know if naming will bring any good to anybody?

but speaking of small claims court i dont really have anything to claim as long as he replaces my brake lines and refunds the labour? but the fact is that he didnt do a good enough job with the most important part of a car.. if they had burst on the motorway its a 100% guarentee i would have hit someone or something - judging by all the cars that were out today.

Well i'm from near leicester and am always on the lookout for people to work on my car, i'd be interested to know who it was from that point of view.

As for a claim against him, as no accident or anything actually happened i cant see grounds for a claim, but a full refund/replacing the parts is a definate!

he deals with alot of jap cars when i went there he had 3 skylines and an fto and heard lots of good things about him.. it may just be a stupid mistake he made i dont know.

if i take pics should i take the wheel off first? ive got a feeling hes not going to replace the lines or refund what i paid him, which was £90 to fit the lines and 4 pads.

rang him today and like usual he wouldnt fault his work..

Jesus mate!

Bloody hell, thank god you weren't on the motorway! Were the brakes getting progressively worse at all on the way back? Well the main thing is you are ok, the car is in one piece and no-one was hurt. Not sure on what I would do in this instance... I think the guy who did the work, should at the very least repair the damage foc. Difficult one, just glad your ok.

If theyre a well respected garage naming and shaming is a very powerful tool.

Did the AA write a report or anything? If so its only gotta say the magic words 'rubbing on tyre' or words to that effect. Id get pics, and speak to the owner of said garage, or get an independent garage to check it out. Its plain dangerous and could have been alot worse than it was.

hey steve

i know thank god it wasnt on there or it would have been nasty! it wasnt exactly progressively worse, as i got into bham the pedal started going down more than it was this morning, and then i parked up and when i started moving again the pedal was almost to the floor. topped the fluid up and within minutes it was back to the same thing.

im gonna go down to him on my thursday day off and see what hes going to do now..

the aa didnt actually come out as i told them they wont be able to repair it and should just send a 4 post truck instead.. which was an external contracter. he just gave me a receipt of the work done but no actual report. ill take pics tomorrow and spoke to him already but he says oh no its the lines. so if he doesnt refund my labour and buy me new parts il have to take it further somehow.

£90 to fit them?! It only took me about 2 hours to fit mine, and that was at the side of the road!

it wasnt for just the lines it was also for pads all around and new brake fluid complete drain and refill. i didnt want to try fitting them myself for the reason that brakes are very important and i didnt want to be in the situation im in now!

Might also be worth mentioning to him that unles he sorts it out you may feel forced to name and shame him on the Skyline forum and see if one of the local newspapers is interested in the story ('embelish' the speed/potential hazard/near death experience etc. :)) - then break his legs :) :)

Routing is ALWAYS the fitter responsibility. These were goodridge lines, VERY unlikley they were wrong.

thats exactly what i said to him. will have to see what his excuse is when i go to see him, and take action from there.

yeah il definately drop that one on him, but would you want him to do the work on your car again after fucking up once? if it was something not so dangerous it would have been ok but most of today ive been on the motorway doing 70-80's and it could have gone at any point!

Go get 'em. I reckon its cut and dried. They could be paying for more than some new lines and fluid!

what you mean cut and dried?

Mate, if a tuner cant fit brake lines properly, regardless of him rectifying his fault, we need to know who it is! I dont think him losing business matters. Anyone of us 'locals' could use him and have the same problem resulting in something far more serious. Pm or msn me who it is if you dont want to air it publicly fella.:)
