Oil for a mk4 N/A

This will have been asked many times, but I can’t find any previous threads, so apologies in advance.

I have a Jap import mk 4 SZ. I'm planning an oil change this weekend. Any advice on what Oil I should use? I’m the first owner in the country of the car and its just clocked 52000 miles. There is a big service at 60,000 but I dont know when the last service was done.

Also, just wondering, does anybody know if the SZ has the head designed so if the cam-belt snaps, no valve damage is done?

TIA

I use Valvoline Semi-synthetic. Get the cam belt done anyway, its piece of mind more than anything. Should cost between £150-200 to get the belt done but get it done by someone who knows what they are doing. Bung some platinum plugs in there while your at it.

JPS Have a special on Valvoline Synpower. £40 for 8 litres delivered. 01908 367100

The GTE engine is non interference until you get really wild with the cams, or add HKS pistons ( JE's are fine!). I assume the NA will be the same.

Oh your joking!

I was hoping this would be reasonably straight forward.

Its the first oil change I have done on the car and was hoping for an easy ride.

Oh well, will just have to see what happens.

Supraman, I learnt the hard way re the oil filter tightness.

You need to get a proper tool, it will save you lots of time and stop you swearing too much. I got a syke's pickavant (can't be arsed to look how its really spelt)

On the NA's you won't have to remove anything to get the filter off, but the filter will leak oil prior to it fully unscrewing so it may be worth rigging up a bag to catch this excess, and that you can let the filter drop into.

Sump can be tight too in my experience, not a problem just might need more leverage than you think.

Excellent - Cheers for the advice Scooter.

Might take a trip to Halfrauds to grab a oil Filter removal tool then.

On previous cars I have just rammed a screw driver through the filter and removed it that way.

Can the sump nut be re-used, if so does it need thread sealer?

yes its reused, and you just need a new washer (always get mine from Mr toyota when i get the filter)

BTW - in halfords make sure you get a proper removal tool (metal band with heavy duty screw clamping) and not a pressed bit of metal with part of a bike chain attached! trust me paying the £15ish quid over £8 is worth it.

Do a search on non-interference engine.Mkiv.com also has some good info all will be revealed.

I'm going to the Valvoline oil station next week to have my supra's oil changed. I want to splurge and get the engine filled with Valvoline Synpower for performance but I'm not sure if my engine has a slight oil leak because there is slight exhaust smoke coming out. So instead I was thinking of using MaxLife oil to try and seal up the rings in the pistons to minimize leakage.

My question is, does Valvoline Synpower have additives to help minimize oil leaks like Valvoline MaxLife? If it does, i'll definitely go with Synpower. If not, then I'd rather try to seal up the pistons with Maxlife.

Do a compression test dude , filling it with thick oil is only putting off the inevitable !!!

I had the unfortunate experience of a cambelt slippage on my N/A a few weeks ago, luckily the engine is non-interference so even if it snapped completely you shouldn't have any problems.

For a new belt, tensioners and a few other bits plus the work I was charged £270, not bad considering what it could have cost.

The work was carried out by a local engineer who has previously owned a TT version so he knew what he was doing.

Enjoy the car mate!

Nice one Mongoosemuffler. It is reassuring to know. I got the car in October 2003 and I'm the first UK owner,. I think the belt is quite recent, as it looks new, but I know thats no guarentee. I have just clocked 53000, so I will do the oil change this weekend, then in 7k get the big service done.

As for enjoying the car, that I am. I'm still suprised how quick it is for a big heavy car. I did want a TT, but I had 2 Cossies before, and I could not help but throw money at them! If I had a TT I would have to make sure it had more power than my first cossie, which had nearly 400bhp, but that would cost!

Its better to get it done for piece of mind but make sure they know what their doing, the monkey's I bought my car off didn't tension it up correctly and it slipped for that reason. They've gone out of business now so hopefully won't be messing anyone else about.

Just failed MOT on Sat and I need a new rear box before it will pass due to the huge hole that's suddenly formed in the last few weeks as my new house is surrounded by speed humps.

Might as well go for something decent and stick a few other things on while I'm there!

What exhaust have you got on yours?

The whole car is completely standard, so I'm pretty sure it's a Standard Exhaust, but I might be wrong. I cant any see any names on it. Well I say completley standard, that was until some tossa in Reading decided to modifiy the side of the car last night. The side skirt between the drivers door and rear arch has been caught, now gotta find someone to spay it

Where in Berkshire are you?

I used to live in Reading but I've recently moved to Maidenhead as it's a bit closer to work, I know that defies the point of having a supra but the petrol and milage on the car was not good. I work in Slough so it's only a ten minute drive down A4 as apposed to the hour long haul down the M4 every morning.

As much as I've enjoyed the car over the last year or so I might have to sell it soon. I really don't want to might be forced into it.

I've been on my dads insurance since I've had it, as he owned it before me but he's just brought a brand new scooby STi 8 so need to get own insurance and the quotes so far have been pretty steep.I'm sure it's worth it tho!!!
