ManwithSupra
I have a strage noise when i go above 40 mph, It like a wooing / humming and you get a small vibration on the peddles. Now i have had the front discs changed recently which solved the brake judder but now i have this woooing sound (and no its not the turbos) As some of you know the car had been inloved in a small nock with a barrier and since then it has made this noise, i dont think it is a hub as there doesnt seem to be any play in any of the wheels and i am not getting any wheel shudder or brake peddle shudder, and it doesnt get worse while turning. I have had the front alignment done and they did not pick any problems up. The Rear alignmnet does need to be done but it does not feel like it is coming from the back. Im a little confused on where this may be coming from i know its not with the speed of the engine cos i put the car in N while going along and let the revs drop its with the speed of the wheels and i am not sure what it can be. Has any one had a similar problem.

Jspec Germany
Does the car make power normally in both turbos and when you brake, does the car track straight ahead?
Fifty
wooing and humming - classic wheel bearing noises IMHO Rich:d

ManwithSupra
Yes it boosts fine and it seems to brake in a straight line Does the car make power normally in both turbos and when you brake, does the car track straight ahead?

ManwithSupra
why is that ?
Ian W
why is that ? well, afaik your gearbox will not thank you for it and i'm pretty sure there are other components that it would damage as well. this is why autos when recovered are supposed to be put on flat-beds and not towed. ManwithSupra
So what does it actualy do to the box if you are N when moving along
Ian W
So what does it actualy do to the box if you are N when moving along being non-technically minded i'm afraid i just know it's not good. hopefully someone will come along and tell us exactly why. Pixelfill
AFAIK and from what I have read I think it's to do with lubrication. The oil pump for the autobox is connected to the drive, so if the box is in neutral the pump isn't being driven therefore the box isn't getting any oil circulation. I might have over simplified this, but to my mind it means don't put the car in Neutral while it is moving - so I don't Mike

Ian W
Makes no difference it makes no difference? so why, prey tell is it that you're not supposed to tow an auto if it's okay to do this? if i'm wrong then it seems to be a pretty common misconception.... http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showpost.php?p=397365&postcount=
gaz1
might be worth checking your brake dust guards, could be a slight rubbing on your discs
ManwithSupra
Ok quick update it went in for an investigation and the guy checked the bearings etc (looked for play etc) and he said that it doesent sound or feel like any of your bearings are shot. He took the car out and said there is a vibration when you go above 20mph, he has said that the rear discs need replacing and that may be the issue ?? I dont think it can be as the vibration is in the front footwell and on the steering which indicates front wheels, i have had the front wheels aligned and they didnt say anything was wrong with it. Now totaly confused i have no idea what it can be, it seems to be getting louder though

pistonbroke
Sorry slightly off topic, You can't tow a supra on its rear wheels because its an auto, yes, this is correct, but this is only because the engine isnt running, I always thought the drive for the pump is up by the torque convertor that spins with the engine, so if the engines running, so is the gearbox oil pump. Otherwise how would it build up pressure to engage a gear when the car is first started, if the pump was connected to the drive of the axle, and the car didn't move it would'nt have any pressure to engage gears. So don't worry, unless you engage neutral when the engines not running and the cars moving, no damage can be caused. As for the noise, Put the spare on the front of the car on each side seperatly to see if the noise dissapears, I had similar problems when I damaged the inside of a tyre wall on an old car of mine, its suprising how much noise it made, the inside of the tire had completely fallen apart and was rolling around in big chunks inside the tyre.
