Bodykit Adhesive

I was tinkering around in the garage today when I finally snapped. The rear bodykit skirts on my Soop are a bloody disgrace! They've started lifting from the main body of the car and look frankly ridiculous now.

In a moment of insane madness I grabbed a screwdriver, whipped the screws out and yanked one off. Actually it was more like grapple with the foam tape adhesive that was still on there, and slowly prise one off.

My moment of righteous triumph lasted approximately 5 seconds, until I realised what I'd done. I was stood there grinning like a maniac, one skirt held triumphantly in my hand and one god-awful mess left where it had been.

Ok, down to my questions at last. I've cleaned up the rear panel that I removed it from, there is a little paintwork damage under there, but I've pretty much managed to remove all of the gunky stuff. Now where on earth do I buy the adhesive to stick it back on? I've tried Halfords, I've tried asking the local bodyshop.... he reckons 90 quid for the fixing kit, I just laughed at him and told him I'd use sellotape before I paid him 90 quid! Does anyone know where I can buy this elusive double backed sticky tape? (ok, so maybe its a bit more specialised than that but come on!)

Its a shame the paint work is damaged really, I quite like it without the skirt on. :(

Please, someone help!

Many thanks,

Graham

I used to buy rolls of the stuff for the local body shop, for my sons Nova. Omly got about One foot left.  Very sticky, hold on for one to two minutes and it sticks for ever.  about £11 a roll one roll, should do both sides. I will ask my body shop man where he gets it. I am seeing him on Thursday. I will get you some if required.

The stock bodykit is held on by double-sided tape and a few screws. I do not like that approach because, after a few years, it lifts-off.

The stuff I use is called Sicaflex. It is a compound that is designed for sticking body-panels together. I can send you a tube if you like. But I warn you that you must organise the holding of the panel in precisely the right position beforehand. Because once this stuff sets, you will NOT be able to remove the panel without doing damage.

Thanks for the help everyone. That Sikkaflex sounds fantastic. Unfortunately, knowing me it also sounds like a sure fire way for me to unwittingly attach a permanent airbrake to my car, in the form of a skirt at right angles to the body! :)

We use 3M stuff in our body shop but there is 3 different types (2 types of foam backed and a glue type) if your anywhere near Aylesbury bucks E-mail me and i'll sort you out a roll to try if you want ??

Unfortunately I'm a couple of hours away, can you order it directly from 3M, or is it a trade only thing?

I will ask my body shop man where he gets it. I am seeing him on Thursday. I will get you some if required.

That'll be great if you can find out where he gets it from Phil.

I might as well ask, does anyone know of any good, reasonably priced bodyshops near the Aldershot/Farborough/Camberley area, or close to the M25 that could do the job for me? I'm starting to lose my bottle. :)

The more I look at it without the skirt, the more I'm tempted to leave it off and get the area resprayed instead. Its definately growing on me, I'm just terrified of what it'll cost to get the work done!

Thanks

Graham

Hmm, I hear what you are saying, Phil, but I personally would not reco 8789 for the glueing of the sideskirts. 8789 is a dedicated seam-sealer. Okay, you could use it as a kind of body-panel glue but I'm a bit of a purist (as you know).

One product that does come to mind, which the original poster could try, is 08611.

This is the stuff that looks like black putty. However, compress it between two smooth, clean surfaces and it sticks like, er, glue. But, then again, it isn't.

If anyone has removed their inner door panel, they would have seen the plastic vapour barrier. Around the edge of this barrier, that sticks it to the metal of the door, is the kind of bonding agent I'm talking about.

Yours,

J
