Hks Ecu

If you look at all the specs (inlcuding options), the Motec is a much much better choice. However, for the average "I just want a fast car" owner, the V-Pro does enough.

I would ALWAYS choose the Motec purely for the knowledge that exists here in the UK for them. Not even the Autotronic comes close here, never mind the V-Pro. It is what put me off an AEM too, as flying someone in or sending the ECU off (lol) does not appeal. It would be ok on a true specced-from-the-ground-up car, that never changes, but for us tinkers, swapping cams, changing intake manifolds etc etc, it makes sense to be able to change the map whenever.

I know of 2 decent garages that charge 35'ish for mechanical work (dont quote me on the actual figure, it might be a case of giving or taking a fiver :)) Ive never heard of a garage altering its hourly rates for mapping work though. One rate suits all from what Ive experienced over the years. Not sure who can map what though. Too many ecu's out there to be bothered with them all.

But mapping isn't mechanical work, it's specialised stuff, with dyno time thrown in, either rolling road (spit) or engine dyno time. The top boys are at least 900 a day plus fuel and oils, plus time to set up on dyno and remove. If they don't have engine mounts, exhaust adaptors and flywheel adptors, add that on, too.

Not trying to be funny but you obviously have never had to have a stand alone ECU mapped.

I ran my T88 on V Pro ( although an earlier engine) i was pleased with it, it suited my spec needs and i was happy with it..

I agree it can be a pain that there are only a handful of people in the UK that can map them. I experienced two HKS Mappers in the UK a Norther one (because they are close to me) and Owen Devl... i have to say i highly rate Owen Dev.... top notch service.. very friendly and mapping seemed good..

Also running my TRD2000GT on a HKS ecu again setup by Owen and it runs superbly.

So if you go the HKS Route.. i would recommend Mark @ Owen Developments... Havent had much experience with Abbey or TDi South.. although i would consider not coming to a northern branch for hks mapping ;)
