Gazboy
The previous owner of my car, in her infinite wisdom chose to drill loads of holes in the airbox. It's been on my "to-do" list for ages btw. Yesterday at Brunters I found the car was reluctant to accelerate in top gear (I say reluctant, I still ran down a Z3M like it hit a vat of treacle) and initialy thought it might just have been because of the tall top gear. Then I started thinking a bit more. Could the heat build up from the engine bay reduce my power at sustained WOT due to the cold air feed being breeched by the drill-holes? My intercooler, while not brand new isn't in bad nick btw.
mikeyb10supra
. It's been on my "to-do" list for ages btw. Thats a joke right Could the heat build up from the engine bay reduce my power at sustained WOT due to the cold air feed being breeched by the drill-holes?. Heat will cause the ECU to bring back the ingnition causing a sluggish feeling, I doubt its the box though TBH.....how big are the holes?? Gazboy
4-5mm, and there are loads of them. Not a joke- there has always been something else needing money instead... (like that scum who rammed my car with a trolley, now I need a new wing)

Homer
Why not just gaffer tape them up and see if the problem persists?
Gazboy
Why not just gaffer tape them up and see if the problem persists? I might do next time. A friends 993TT had to have it's splitter tapped up this time, but I didn't put two plus two together at the time.
JohnA
Why not just gaffer tape them up and see if the problem persists? yeah, use DuckTape and if it feels better then look for an old and unloved airbox. Lots about with people shelling out for 'performance' cone filters.

I'm not entirely convinced this will be the magical fix, I think there is something expensive in distress.
Swampy442
The amount of airflow through the engine bay at that speed, its unlikely to be the airbox IMO
Pete
I remember when this was all the rage about 10 years ago with small euro hatch owners. Not something I've ever advocated I might ad. Horrific to think it done to a Supra

Horrific to think it done to a Supra Guilty as charged, think I've still got the copy of max power up in the loft that explained the benefits and showed you how to do it
Swampy442
They do it on Soarers, except we cut the front of the airbox out and seal it from the engine bay. Its called a BFI (Big Fookin Intake) Plenty of dyno results to back it up. And while Im on accronyms, whats a BPU?!
Guest rabskyline
is the engine bay so tight that the airbox being drilled would be a problem?? at most it should help the engine breath "!!!! i cant see why this would make it sluggish. do you have an oil cooler fitted ? is your intercooler wing mounted ?? it has been warmer lately but shouldnt make any difference coz japan is miles hotter and humid like you wouldnt believe ! i might be off track here but i dont think an airbox would strangle it ! carl0s
And while Im on accronyms, whats a BPU?! Basic Performance Upgrade. A "BPU'd" (or just BPU) Supra-turbo is one which has had the essential basic mods done to allow better spool-up and higher boost. That'd be Exhaust/De-cat, FCD and a boost-control thing (and anything else that might be required along the way (say perhaps bigger injectors on a Jap car)). Stock smic (which appears to be ok, but not in A1 condition), no aftermarket oil coolers.
gordy.r
Sorry to resurrect a post from the Dark Ages, but it was something I was searching for (like a good boy before I get told off for posting a new thread ) and I only found one thread that matches my search! (this one). I remember this being something we did on VAG engines a while back for improved aural pleasure but it 'supposedly' added performance gains as well... if you believe the Max Power hype lol Nice to see it has been discussed and pretty much found to offer no benefits unless you do some serious modding like the Soarer boys. gordy.r
P.S. I would have hoped the airbox being discussed here had been drilled pre filter and not after the filter as this would be pretty pointless and bad for the engine!
