W.O.T.M. Twin/Triple Fuel pump hanger

As part of my upgrade I'm fitting twin Walbro pumps. When you fit two pumps, it leaves you with the question of how to fit them when the stock fuel pump hanger only caters for one. I've seen a few people who have jubilee clipped the second pump to the hanger or the first pump. I decided I wanted to go down a route that's a little more "engineered".

For this reason I bought the Wide Open Throttle Motorsport twin/tripple fuel pump hanger.

It actually worked out to be bloody expensive! With shipping it came in at £309, then there was a £9 international bank transfer charge, and then there was £75 in import VAT and duties! :(

However, on initial inspection it appears to be a fairly sound piece of kit.

Here's a few pics of how it came:-

You can see here how the pumps are mounted. If you want to run triple pumps, then there's a mount that can be detatched if you are just running two:-

Here you can see the fittings that the hoses from the pumps get pushed onto , and the fitting for the return line:-

Here's the top plate from above, the odd shaped hole is to accept the stock electrical connector:-

However, it seems a bit odd to me, if you're going to use aeroquip fittings on all the rest of the fuel lines, why you would be happy just pushing the hoses on to these fittings. The system is only ever going to be as strong as it's weakest link... I'm planning on using aeroquip fittings throughout. The good news is you can remove the fittings that it comes with, and the small box piece that push on fittings go to. Here's a picture of that piece, you can see where it's o'ringed to seal against the top plate to stop the fuel draining back into the tank:-

There's only two problems with the hanger in my eyes. The first one is easily overcome. Coming from America, all the alan bolts are imperical. Not really a problem, but whatever size the small bolts are, I don't have the alan key for, and I was pretty sure I had a full set! I ended up using a torx driver to undo it. Not ideal.

The second problem is a bit more of a pain. As I am using aeroquip fittings, I removed the standard push on return line, to try and fit the -6 fittings I've got. They don't fit. Neither does -4. I've no idea what size it is, as it's not anything metric as far as I can tell either. It's actually two sizes, a thru hole of some kind with a tapped counterbore. I couldn't get any fitting other than the push on that it came with to work with it though.

Luckily for me, I've got access to a pretty a machine shop that I can use to drill and tap it to the 9/16 UNF size it needs to be to fit -6. I'll be doing this hopefully either tomorrow or the next day at work. Hopefully with that done, I'll be able to instal it within the next week or so. I'll let you know how I get on!

nice bit of kit.dont you think you been overly cautious thinking things going to fail.the aeromotive type connectors look the biz.if you use push fit fittings and secure well dont think you would have any problems.i have used silicone rubber pipes on supra and never used jubilee clips and never had them blow off.sounds like you doing it how you want it doing for peace of mind.

How do you intend to get AN/Aeroquip fittings on to the pumps, as they have the same push on as the part you removed.. And they are plastic :blink:

 

I would think thats another weak link :blink:

 

I know. It's a bit of a joke on the part of the pump manufacturer's in my eyes. What's the point of using decent fasteners all over and then using rubbish push-on's on the pumps. Given the choice I would happily pay say a 10% premium to get some decent connectors on the pumps.

The main worry I continually have is safety (ie petrol fire). If a hose pops off in the tank, then it's a pain yes, and potentially a big problem engine wise, but it's not going to endanger anything, so I don't see it as a massive concern.

All the lines I'm making up will be pressure tested.

That said, if there's any reasonable steps I can take to reduce any potential failures, then I'll be taking them. As Monkey said, "peace of mind".

Stripped out the stock fuel hanger and started assembling this. Unfortunately I've not got my second pump yet, but hopefully that'll arrive within the next couple of days. Ignore the fact that there isn't any clip to the pump, as it'll all be coming apart.

However I found I had a number of small issues. Firstly, the 90 degree fittings I had bought ,massively interfere with the service cover:-

Also the supplied fitting for the breather also clashes with the service cover, and as it's on the other side of the hanger, the stock hose isn't long enough:-

To get around the clashing issue, I'm going to replace the three 90degree fittings to banjo's. It's not a problem as the banjo's give the same amount of restriction as a compact fitting anyway. I'll have to modify the breather hole to suit -6, but that's not really a problem either.

 

The wiring needs to be sorted as well. It's still as it was for the single pump. If anyone has info on the current draw of these pumps, or any recommendations on wire gauges to use when re-wiring the loom to accept twin pumps, then please mention it.

LOL, but then you'd be able to see the tupperware that's in the tank:-

To be honest I'm a bit fed up with it. It cost me loads more than it should have, and I've had to modify it quite extensively to get it to fit with common fittings. Unfortunately I couldn't recommend it to anyone else, not unless they've got access to a machine shop (which I do - luckily!)

If anyone is interested in one of these, pm me. I may be able to sort something out that with all the issues that I've had resolved.

Good write up Tony:thumbs: Had mine for over a year now and had some of the same issues as you with the fittings threads, But my local Shop helped me out there and found what they were, ( dont ask me forgoten now) The only issue I have concerning the plate going back on is the -6 return elbow, thats the only one stopping it sit flush. I'll get a cast elbow on there when i can be arsed and the cover plate will sit right home again no probs. Great bit of Kit TBH just wished the fittings came with it.

Can I ask a (maybe stupid) question at his point. Why dont you just use one big pump? The hanger looks like a work of milling art though, just not well thought out, shame really

 

Tony's turbo's can deliver nigh on 900HP at the Fly. Try frinding a single intake pump costing not much more than 2x Walbro GSS342's....I think you'll fail though I'm all ears if you know of one.
