Jake
I'm still having a knocking noise problem with my 98 VVTi tiptronic TT. I've had the engine and gearbox out, swapped the engine and reused the existing gearbox and torque converter. When first pulling away it makes a horrible racket. (Video clip here) Once moving it drives fine. It seems to be a bit worse if pulling away and turning at the same time, eg at a juction. Things that may or may not be relevant: Before the blown engine was removed the car was towed about half a mile at low speed, no more than 30mph. The propshaft was removed and refitted without marking the relative rotational position to the gearbox and rear axle, so it's most likely not back on it the same position. Is that important? Gearbox oil has been replaced. All nuts, bolts and engine/gearbox mounts are secure. Thanks for any help.

geoffvalenti
Torque converter? Have you tried a stall test? Where do you think that the noise is coming from? TC? Gearbox? propshaft? I know it's difficult when you're driving, and bloody noises seem to travel all over the damn car If you run the car in gear, with the wheels off the ground on a trolley jack can you get it to make the noise then? Jake
Torque converter? Have you tried a stall test? No, what is it? Where do you think that the noise is coming from? TC? Gearbox? propshaft?Hard to say, seems like it's external (not inside the box) I thought it was from the front of the propshaft at first but it looks like it's fitted correctly and I don't think a propshaft would go bad just from not being used for a while. If you run the car in gear, with the wheels off the ground on a trolley jack can you get it to make the noise then?I did try that but couldn't reproduce the fault/noise. bromy
Do the propshafts have a universal joint?
Jake
Yeah, two of them. I might swap the propshaft off my 93 auto and see what happens.
geoffvalenti
Jake, a stall test is put the car in gear with the engine running, foot hard on the brake (fcuking hard in a Supra ) handbrake on, floor the throttle and note the revs that the engine reaches, ie the stall speed. At the same time listen for any noises. If you hear anything you can eliminate Gearbox, propshaft etc. Personally, if I had another propshaft I'd be out there under the car changing it now. If you can't feel any play in the one fitted ATM, I doubt if it will make any difference, but its the next logical step short of pulling the 'box Is there any vibration? Propshaft UJs usually vibrate if they are running out of true. When I get a chance, I'll have a look in the manual to familiarise myself with the exact setup of the transmisson components. Got to go, meant to be going out, and now I'm getting shouted at

Personally, if I had another propshaft I'd be out there under the car changing it now. Sod that, too hot. I'm sweating like a pig just sat here. Is there any vibration? Propshaft UJs usually vibrate if they are running out of true. No, seems fine once you get hoving above 5mph.
