I need a new ISP - suggestions?

PlusNet have annoyed me - on Monday they performed an 'upgrade' to my account (2mb to a potential 8mb) and since then it hasn't worked at all. I've spent 7+ hours on hold to their support team without managing to get through and the online support system has yielded nothing more than a response to say it's being passed to someone....

So I want to jump to someone else, PlusNet have been getting gradually worse for the past few years and now it's getting to me.

I'm currently on a 2mb 'unlimited' account (which is a lie because it has limits) and pay just over £20 a month, my line has just been regraded and reports 5mb on the modem, I can't use this though as the PlusNet side is down.

Ideally I want 2mb+ with minimal limits (not a heavy user but play online games, stream music etc), I don't need email, webspace or anything else really, just a means to get onto the Internet.

Any suggestions?

(Ideally I'd like you to tell me why I should switch to the company mentioned rather than 'I use AOL, they are great' :))

The day you hear me recommend AOL to anyone is the day they need to come and put that tight white jacket on me and cart me away.

If you want a reason to leave your current ISP then you already have one. I get annoyed spending 7 minutes on the phone 'trying' to speak to someone. I wouldn't have got to 7 hours before I jumpped ship and went somewhere else.

I nearly jumped ship too...I moved home and they thouroughly botched the process up and lost my request in the quagmire.

As for speed...they said once it's up and running you'll suffer random disconnects for upto 2 weeks whilst the system tries to work out how fast your connection can go....and it did. Very bloody annoying....how can it take more than a day to find out if the line can support 8mb or not is beyond me.

But they do have the fattest pipes...and I just don't know who else is good...

Im a Keconnect partner.

And IMHO they are the best ISP out there.

There downtime is incredibly minimal (usually BT phone line problems if it is, but this is very rare). There customer support is second to none! Your call is answered straight away, every time and is sorted on the spot.

For example I was round a clients, who was on the cheapest package where they have the internet evenings and weekends, around 4pm where obviously there internet wasn’t due to kick in until 6pm. I needed to use their internet to download a file so phoned them up, explained the problem and was greeted with the response “ok sir we will just switch it on early for you” B) I nearly fell over in shock! By the time I had hung up, I dialed up and sure enough I was online.

Details below, and I maybe able to sort a little discount for you if you or anyone is interested :)

i went over to "ace internet" - not impressed - thr 2mb "unlimited" downloads now has a "fair use policy" attached to it - i'm thinking of going over to orange - its free as i spend more then £30 a month anyway! so i'll save £25 a month lol

Although it is cable. I am happy with the service from NTL.

I have only had about an hours downtime in the 10 months i have been with them, and that was posted on their website in advance to let you know.

I have the 10mb service @ £35 a month

Yeah Nildram are supposed to be good, I had a mate used to work for them.

Been with them for several years now. Only time there has ever been trouble was when BT upgraded firmware in the dslam without notifying us. Never been a problem with Nildram themselves :)

Anyway, I hope you all get crap service cause I can't get broadband :(

lol now that's not very nice :p

I'm with PNet too. They started the upgrade process on my line about a month ago and it still hasn't settled down, but it is a lot more stable than it was, and 4 times faster. Might be worth staying with them for a while.

If it was just unstable I'd be happy enough to live with it for a while - unfortunately the upgrade just removed my ability to connect completely :(

An ISP ahould be able to make it's homepage work without dead pictures :)

lol

seriously, I've recommended nildram to loads of people at our office here who are now all using it and I've never heard a single complaint.

I don't normally do recommendations either because of the hassle if it goes wrong...
