celica500plus
Hi, I am new to the supra, I picked up the black 97 supra tt from Mark at pheonix yesturday. Extremely clean looking car and drives really nice. Just like to say thanks to Mark extremely good guy and should I need parts I won't hesitate to call. I was out in the supra today and when putting my foot down the car goes but it feels flat till around 4k then there is some torque. I was just wondering why this is? Does one turbo spin first then the other later around 3500revs is that why the power is relatively flat untill 4000revs. Sorry if this is a real newby question, its just im used to a 2litre big single turbo and high lift cams and i'm unsure with the supra when I should be shifting? I'd just like to know if its flat because possibly I don't have a turbo working? Any assistance is much appreciated Regards Stuart
Pig
Welcome, i would imagine its exactly what you think it is. 1 turbo spools up after the other, therefore giving you a boost at about 4k. Did anyone else dread the subject?!?!
Feakins
Hey there buddy, I was there getting a bearing done was it you I saw drive off? Car looks very nice. As for the torque it does sound fairly normal, at about 4k is when you really feel it when the 2nd turbo kicks in. I'm sure they must of given the car a good look at so it must be running as it should. PS - Just like to say thanks to Phoenix for sorting my bearing out, top service and sure I will go back there in the future.

celica500plus
Hi, Thanks guys this settles my mind, any idea whens the best shifting point, I've been shifting around 5000revs a bit afraid to take it further untill I know. Yeah that was me picking up the new toy, the other black one was yours then, I wasnt sure. It looked nice aswell! I'm really pleased with the car and Mark couldnt have been nicer or provide a better service top garage, wish we had one like that up here. Mark took me out in the car and it felt quick, I think I must be babying it! Thought my post might get a few second takes and some oh dears[GRIN][/GRIN] Looks like I just need to get used to the way the power is delivered sorry for the panic hehe Stuart

celica500plus
Thanks, for reassuring me guys. Mikey, it feels totally different to the celica, more smooth, more road useable, much, much more responsive and what really surprised me was it is on a par if not slightly better in the dry at handling. The cornering ability is great. The power is obviously never going to feel the same as the celica with the supra standard but i'm more than happy to take the plus points I have achieved by changing. What a difference it is to still have power in 5th gear at 60mph. If I was in the celica I could make a cup of tea in the time it took me to get it spooled in 5th at 60mph. Totally pleased with it throughout, I believe I have made a wise choice and won't be looking back. The new toy
mikeyb10supra
Great looking car.....and at such low milage I doubt you will have any reliablilty issues, word of advice, keep the stock airbox if its there, performs much better than any aftermarket filter!! hope to see you at some meets soon
Feakins
Damn I want those facelift headlights!
celica500plus
Ah to late it was already removed by the previous owner and replaced with hks filters. I'll be trying to get the car as close to perfect body wise and leave the engine alone for a bit to give the visa's a rest. Hope to make it to some shows, missed a lot due to the celica being rebuilt throughout last year it will be good to get back to them. Cheers again for the help
celica500plus
Feakins, do those lights I have come in glass in the UK versions do you know? They seem to haze a little as they aren't glass being an import I guess they only came like that.
Sean1933
i'll answer for im...nope...those headlights are facelift only. Since Facelift model only came as an import, they are all plastic. Great looking car by the way!
Feakins
The UK ones are glass yep but also have a silver background. Most people prefer the facelift ones you have I think. The Jap non-facelift that I have are plastic and silver background! And also faded yellow!
Jezz
Did anyone else dread the subject?!?! Shudder. Took one glance then had to look again. Flat and 4 in the same sentance.

Jake
:BidToGetThreadBackOnTopic: Stuart Do you have a boost gauge in the car? It should make positive boost from like 2000rpm and then dip a bit around 3800-4000rpm as it spools up the second turbo and then it should give a healthy surge of power starting from about 4000/4200rpm onwards to peak revs. It shouldn't be flat until 4000rpm but I suppose 'flat' is a relative term - depends what you're comparing it to. celica500plus
Cheers for the info on the lights guys. Jake I don't have a boost gauge in there, but to be honest it does feel some what flat on that first turbo spooling at 2000rpm, I suppose I may be expecting to much from a small turbo on its own. It does pack some torque at 4000-4200 where you said the second is basically joining the first. Think I need to take some time to get to know it better. There is a boost controller in there but the cats are still in so I don't know what settings its been at. I suppose its restricted on what boost it can run anyway with the cats in play. Whitesupraboy2
maybe someone has put it in TTC mode, long shot but never know and i dont know how to check that, having no turbos
celica500plus
What is TTC mode? Is it to do with the boost controller or the ecu? Cheers Stuart
hob
I could make a cup of tea in the time it took me to get it spooled in 5th at 60mph. 60 mph in 5th? 3rd gear for 60 and only after a shift from second think its 63 mph top in 2nd gear, not suprised it took ages to spool in 5th lol
Jake
What is TTC mode? Is it to do with the boost controller or the ecu? No. He's saying maybe the turbos are running in parallel rather than sequentially. I don't think they are though from your description. celica500plus
Is there a control for this to switch back and forth or is this setup with the boost contoller, its an HKS one. If they are running parrallel, would they kick around 4000rpm? or would it be sooner?
Jake
Sooner. It would be gutless to start with then the turbos would both come on-line at say 3400-3600rpm. Your car would also sound like the exhaust had blown. TTC makes a much deeper noise at low revs and sounds like something is wrong with it. celica500plus
I think you are right its not running like that, its much like your description in your first post. I wonder if im just above 2000rpm off boost most times when I have decided to put my foot down, this would explain why im thinking its flat then I only get one big hit of torque. I'll take it out again tommo... and make sure I try it from bellow 2000. I'll alsoo take some time to read up on the manual mark gave me for the boost controller. Thanks you guys have been more than helpful
Tricky-Ricky
I was going to suggest you go TTC mode, i was used to a 335BHP Silvia, with bigger turbo, and i have now gone TTC and actually find it much nicer in its power delivery than the sequential system, it may take a bit longer to come in with TTC but at least you feel like there is some proper grunt when they both come in, instead of an initial rush then a long wait and then a bit of a disappointment when the second turbo comes in.
