tbourner
Yep another 'please run my life for me' thread! We've moved into our house now and it's cool, but I still miss the car, so I need something new to aim for and look forward to (even if it never happens). Option 1: Save up for the next 5 years and get another jap car: Supra (most likely) Evo or Scooby Skyline (would need to be an R34) Option 2: Pass my test and get a motorbike next year some time. Probably would get a CBR600. Option 3: Get a road legal Quad for fun! No idea what they're like really, but seems like a good idea. Option 4: Get a cheaper fun car within the next year: Caterham Elise (bit expensive) Cobra 427 hemi ( ) Option 5: Build a car: Buy a Dutton Phaeton chassis and put a motorbike engine in Tiger or Cat7 type kit Any other small RWD lightweight kit Quite fancy going for something completely opposite to the Supe, like a small lightweight nippy car, but then I'm scared I'd miss the straightline grunt. What should I do?
jim_supra
I think I would be tempted to do option five and build my own car. Not sure on what kit is best, but you can then go at your own pace, and more importantly get alot of fun from doing it. not to mention the satisfaction upon completion. garetheves
Why not get a cheap pocket rocket, Clio Williams, Pulsar GTiR something like that. That way you get the speed without having to save for ages. Or even an MR2 Turbo.
edd_t
Kitcar sounds fun. would love to do that when i have a garage, time, and money!

Yeah been through that idea, but I've said before a 'hot hatch' will never give me the thrills I want - I vow to never modify a FWD piece of crap, I may get a stock hot hatch as a daily driver but it wouldn't be enough fun for my weekend fun car. Or even an MR2 Turbo. i agree, pulsar gtir's are very very fast and smart looking too! when i passed my test i was too young to get insured on one so i went for the alternative .. a sunny 1.6 SR lol. pulsars are very easy to tune aswell but the bottom end always seems to go. I see Supes driving about and nearly end up crashing cos I'm staring at them. My mate's built a few rods so could certainly help me build one, problem is space though I'd have to do it in the garden and cover it!! Unless I rent a council garage. Also a 427 hemi engine is about as much as I wanted to spend in TOTAL!!!

jamesmark
why not build an AC Cobra replica Have to agree, an AC Cobra with Supra TT power going through it, ultimate speed with massive reliability, if its possble that is but with right right amount of time and money anything is possble, look at that dude who is building a 205 with a supra engine

geoffvalenti
Trev Quite honestly in your situation I'd have no hesitation about going for an MR2 Turbo. You can pick them up for reasonably money these days, although bearing in mind your age (lucky bastard ) the insurance is still going to be a fairly big hit. They're great little cars, point and squirt handling, with performance not far off the Supra. If thats not to your taste, then a kit car of sorts. My choice (unless you can run to a V8) would be one with the 2 litre Vauxhall twin cam engine, it sticks out a fair amount of power as standard and is far more tuneable than the Ford SOHC Pinto lump. Otherwise, if you like getting your hands dirty, you can pick up a TVR "S" series, maybe even a V8S for not a lot of money these days, or maybe even a "wedge" (Tasmin, 350i, SEAC etc.) if you can get to like the styling It all depends on your mechanical ability and how soon you want to be driving this (toy) car, as to whether a self build kit car is right for you. You can get a lot of satisfaction once its finished, but loads of them just seem to start with a flourish, then sit in the garage for years untouched, before finaly being sold as unfinished projects Speak to Pete on here. He built himself a nice Tiger Cat.
black cat
have you space for a project like this?? if so what is your bugget at the moment??
tbourner
My problem will be my technical ability. I learnt a lot from the Supra but was held back by fear of breaking something expensive!!! Same would be with an old (or new) TreVoR, I'd be scared to fix it myself (every day ) and would end up spending loads on TVR garages!! With a kit I'd feel like I'm only risking breaking a bit at a time, so would be more confident in jumping in, when it's done I'd know it too well not to fix it myself. I don't tend to do fads unless I know I want it, so I'll be better than most in actually making use of it (probably end up driving it to work etc.). The problem as I said will be space as I don't have a garage, and of course the money but in that respect the kit idea will be the best option I would think? That's why I threw in the quad/bike options as well as space isn't so much an issue for those.
tbourner
have you space for a project like this?? if so what is your bugget at the moment?? See above. Budget is nil! But as I said this is a plan to aim for, probably be in a years time or so.
geoffvalenti
If you haven't got, or can't rent a garage with power and lighting, building a kit car from scratch is really a non starter
