Quit my job today

Basically, I've been in the job for three months - I got approached by a mate I used to work with who offered me the work with him. The job prospects were good - I'm a qualified fitter (lorry/trailer) so the work suited me well - I'd have my own van, work normal 8-6pm hours with every other Saturday. The pay was ok, but he promised it would increase as soon as I had my own van. I started on the 3rd April (when my van would be ready).... April passed, May passed, so I spoke to him last week & said that I wanted a van by the end of the month or I would have to go work somewhere else - well, spoke to him today, still no van then he sends one of the other fitters to speak to me to say that even when I get my van, my wages won't go up for six months....

so to cut a long story very short - I walked out, I parked up the van, left him a note (as he couldn't even speak to me face to face) & now I am jobless!! I was stuck in a position where I felt that a mate was using me, expecting me to just put up with his false promises etc... I've been phoning a few people today for work, but nothing permanent set up as yet... so there's a bottle of JD with my name on it, so I'm gonna go drown my sorrows:friday:

Who thinks I did the right thing in walking out, or should I have stuck it out until I sorted other employment?

shit thats a bad situation but really u should have stayed there and looked for another job first before walking out. hopefully youll find another place soon but what if it takes longer than expected? should have stayed atleast youd have some sort of income until u find something better? i did the same with my previous job, hated it but had to put up with the place until better things came along.edit to say good luck finding a new job! try http://www.totaljobs.com

Probably right in a way, sounds like it was an on the spot decision, and you never think rationally in them situations, at the end of the day he didnt live up to his promises so you did the right thing, im sure you'll find another job quite easily but id get onto it right away!

I had the chance of a job working for a mate recently. But it meant the same:Giving up my secure job, company car, guarranteed wages every month, etc. And taking the plunge.

Never had the bottle to do it, although it sounded really good at the time.

Doesnt sound like your mates been very decent with you. He shouldnt have made promises that he wasnt going to honour in the end.:(

You've just made me realise that i've really done the right thing by staying where i am, And i wish you all the best in finding a new job !

cheers for all the support - in the end, I know that it would have been better for me to stay in the job until I found another job, but I just reached a point today where I thought this ain't happening. I phoned my bird & she said if you're not happy, leave so I took her advice... have had a few reality moments today thinking, oh no, how am I going to pay the mortgage but thankfully I have an HGV licence too, so driving work will be easy to come by.

Another quick point - I have phoned SO many people I used to work with today, & most have had job options & people for me to phone - proves the point that my mother rammed into me as a child to treat others as you expect to be treated & shows if you're a decent person in work, you'll always have afew doors to knock when you need some more work. It was a bad idea taking the job when I look back, but if you don't take risks in life, you spend it all saying 'what if?' If you are driving down the motorway & a lorry is hootin the horn & waving, it'll be me spotting another soop on my travels!

maybe u should have looked for another job while u in work then get something then walk out.

I agree - would have been the wisest thing to do, but I just got pushed to that point & because I had the support of my partner, I thought - let's do this! It felt quite liberating to be honest, scary too, I would never have done this in the past but I now realise that happiness is far more important than how much money I have in the bank.... life's too short to keep taking someone else's sh*t!!! I'll get something sorted, postive thinking & all that but it's hopefully shown other people on here who are in a similiar situation to not keep putting up with it & not to let your boss think they've got you trapped because of fear of leaving, or even saying no...:taped:

Hind sight is always 20/20 vision!!!

I would have (and have done) exactly the same as you have done.

These things are ment to happen, and happen for a reason, the next job you get may not be better money, but you will at least be able to look at yourself in the mirror and know you weren't taken for a mug repeatedly!

Good skills!
