Mr Wayne
Hi Guys, I had a new clutch on my car a couple of weeks ago, and since then, it sometimes drops out of 5th gear into neutral on it's own, without me touching the gear stick. The Toyota dealer who changed the clutch say that this is a total coincidence, and them changing the clutch has nothing to do with it. They've taken a look, and say that there is no adjustment as the gear stick goes straight into the gearbox. They told me that it is likely to be something in the gearbox that needs changing - he said that they have had this problem on Supra's before. Anyway, before I discuss this any more with them, and get a price, I thought i'd see if you guys had any thoughts on what might be wrong, and if this is a common problem with the Supra, then at least a few of you should have had it happen to you. Cheers Wayne
toyotasuprauk
My girlfriend Micra did this and needed the gearbox oil topped up. Its made things much, much better but I don't think its the perfect solution as it still does it from time to time.
blackmax
I think unfortunately it may be just a coincidence. Maybe the clutch has just compounded the problem, but it sounds like a worn selector fork to me.
SimonB
I don't think you could say it was common - I've never heard of anyone having problems with the 6sp box even with pretty serious power going through it. I thought it had a reputation for being very reliable. If you put the wrong gearbox oil in (i.e. anything other than Toyota V160) it causes problems, http://www.mkiv.com has something about that, but IIRC it was to do with the centering of the stick or something, not jumping out of gear. fastisnice
I'm shocked to hear such a problem for a Supra 6sp gearbox. They are bulletproof, i had this problem when i had a wrx.Kicking out of gear, that was a new gearbox..But subaru gearboxes they totally suck went through couple of them. I think you are the only one ever who managed to break a supra's gearbox!!!!!!. Have you been driving too long with a f****d clutch? thats the only reason i can think of, crunching the gears too much ... maybe?
Mr Wayne
I drove it for less than a week when i knew the clutch was shagged - not sure how long the clutch was shagged before i noticed. Never had any problems with crunching gears, even with the knackered clutch. It's not a massive problem - if i keep my hand on the stick when it's in fifth, then it doesn't lose it - i think the gear is working fine, it just sometimes slips out if i'm not holding it - not always.
