jaymdee
Rather a long shot here...but; I got back this afternoon from a week away, and my boiler was showing an error. It is a "Valliant turbomax 828e" and the error code is F28, which the guide says is due to insufficient gas, an electrical error or to check the air vents. The boiler would have been on, but not kicked in when I was away (no need) and was working fine when I left on Friday last week. I don't see why it's stopped working. Any ideas what to try, before contacting someone to come out? (I've tried pressing the reset button). I'm sure it seems to fire OK (I can hear 'roaring'), but after 10 seconds it cuts out. supraaaaaaaaaa
exactly the same thing with mine, butmines a potterton promax, anyway i called someone outand the best thing to do is do a search for the number of the company direct and get the likely faults so they can come armed with the right parts to save you labour @70 per hour it hurts when they turn up to do nothing but order an fing part which the want to make more money on again !! RIJ8631
Hi jaymdee, I'm a boiler engineer but not familiar with the Valiant range. Due to the fact that it appears to 'fire-up' for about 10secs it could be that the flue has been disturbed -is it horizontal of vertical flue ? Do you have any other gas appliances and are they working OK ? Or it may be a faulty detection electrode -ie fires up but does not detect that its lit ,so therefore cut-out I specialise in 4 manufactuers, but sorry that Valliant is not one of them Hope you manage to solve problem Best of luck Ian
jaymdee
Hi Ian, I have gas cooking rings, which work fine. The water pressure is reading 1.2 bar. The flue comes out of the top of the boiler and then bends through 90 degrees and goes out through the wall to outside (about 8 feet up the wall - don't see how it could have been disturbed.) It could be the detection electrode you mention or the gas valve needing adjustment. (is this something I can do?) J
jaymdee
Google is your friend http://cgi.www.a1-gas.co.uk/cgi-bin/www.a1-gas.co.uk/bbmat.cgi?getsubject=4115&script=question&frames=N I know, but thanks for the link. I downloaded 6 pdf's of instructions, installation manuals & fault codes etc, but couldn't find a straight forward answer of what to look for. cheers
RIJ8631
Hi Jaymdee, I have to say to everyone dont mess about with gas appliances if your not trained ( CORGI rules) I will try and give some contacts a phone tomorrow (Sunday) and see if I can find out what Fault F28 is likely to be. Cheers Ian
jaymdee
Ian, you're absolutely right mate. Gas is something I wouldn't touch, just trying to work out in my mind what the answer may be to aid in getting it sorted quickly. If you find anything out, it would be most helpful. It's baffling why it's suddeny stopped working. I didn't achange it's settings when I went away, apart from not demanding any hot water for a week (often goes 4 days with no problem if I'm away with work) The codes list says that error F28 means the boiler is in 'lock out' mode. cheers J

supraaaaaaaaaa
forgot to say mine was exactly the same as that and it was the float switch
green_dragon
If the flue has been disturbed, it's not something daft like a birds nest been built in it whilst you were away is it? Long shot I know, but I've come across stupider things at work!
jaymdee
I've had a look at the flue outside and all looks OK. I'm going to ask a neighbour if the gas was turned off when I was away, as it's possible that my supply to the boiler has been cut off. I'll have to ring the landlord tomorrow to get it sorted J
Animal
And now a word from my better half... I work for an insurance company that deals with gas breakdowns for nearly all the home emergancy policys (except british gas). It might be worth checking your home insurance policys for possable emergancy cover add ons as a lot of people forget that they've got them and will at worse give you about £150 towards repairs which will cover the inital call out and some minor parts most provide better cover than that. If not and you can last a 28 day waiting period a policy will probably work out cheaper than the repair, I hate recomending this but I see the engineers invoices and they can get a bit nasty. You can also make a bit back if you can find anything to complain about spin the right person a tale of woe & inconveniance and I've seen people profit. Lucy. RIJ8631
Hi Jaymdee, sorry was unable to contact anyone today (must be due to nice weather). A)Did you find out if gas had been off while away? -If so then may only need purged to the boiler. B)Any electrical work been done recently ? (Wrong polarity at boiler) C)Did flue terminal look OK ? -no kid battered it with a pole or ball. If not any of these above then it will probably be neccessary to get landlord to fix. Keep us posted on how you get on. Cheers Ian
jaymdee
Thanks to everyone for all the advice. Was able to get a Vaillant engineer in this morning and he knew exactly what the problem was. A sticking gas valve (apparently loads going at the moment for some reason). All replaced and serviced and my landlord is picking up the tab (£265 - ouch) Hot showers again (rather than kettles to fill up the bath!! ) J
