Titanium Exhausts - Are they worth it

Im aware of the weight savings that a titanium exhaust offers. But are there any other benefits to a stainless steel system?

Do they oxidise like a mild steel system? Are they brittle?

Im liking the price and spec of the R1 Amuse Ti system, with 80mm pipework.

Any thoughts out there? Anyone use the system to comment on its sound?

The Nur Spec R is a safe bet, is it drony on the motorway though?

Thanks folks....

No performance benefit, a titanium exhaust is a fraction of the weight of a stainless steel exhaust and they do not rust.

The wall thickness of the tubing is usually very thin and can crack if grounded. I've had to get my ARC Titan exhaust welded twice in 7 years of ownership, I had a skid plate welded on mine at the lowest point that solved the problem. It needs specialist equipment to weld titanium, so if you do crack it you may find it difficult to get it fixed, mine was done by a mate of mine who is a Rolls Royce aero engineer here.

Thanks Nic + Rayman.

As much as I would prefer to go for the under dog regarding exhausts and save money, it seems the "HKS Hiper Titanium Race Series Exhaust" seems to have a great rep. Ive a video of it too. sounds excellent :)

£1,123 from Envy lol, dear enough, but when compared to others ... :)

You can get the Veilside one for £700 ish now. Thats a bargain.

I mean you pay for the fact it weighs nothing and it wont ever rust, but the cons are as Nic said it can fracture at the joints if you clunk it on something.

I've had mine repaired once (For £10) because it was loose at the back due to the holding rods coming loose from the support brackets and thrashing it around the Nurburgring Karrusell didnt help :D

But I'd still go back to it if I wanted another pipe. Its fitment is superb as well as the sound plus it disperses the heat so quickly too.

Amuse R1 is great, still think i'm the only one in the country with it. Got a vid from when i was on stock turbos, will dig it out and pop it up later. I'd never get rid of this exhaust (unless it was for the 4" one :p), roars on boost but is just quiet enough cruising about. I think Michel Lane fell in love with it when he was last in the car :p

Titanium exhausts will crack, hopefully at the welds if you're lucky, if not half way down a section. Making ti exhausts is such a nonsense really, they should be either stainless steel, or if you want weight savings then inconel. £££££!.

Yeah, that. Use all three at work and titanium is shite to work with and very brittle, we have welds split all the time with titanium..........poop stuff.

Yes, very light compared to stainless or inconel but a pain in the arse other than that.

Err No you cant, they are gone forever now.

Really? Have they stopped making them now then?

re: the welds.. I've had no issues since mine was repaired but I wouldnt like to bang it on something. I wouldnt recommend them if your car is lowered :)

Mine was done by a guy with a TIG welder and a titanium rod. Its not that complicated. (he's got lots of practise with bike exhausts)
