First supra - with a T04R turbine...?

Hey guys,

I wonder if you can help.

Ive been made aware of a Supra avaiable, it looks all I want, and more, but Im a little worried with regards to the T04R turbine. Mileage on car is *incredibly* low BTW.

"1993 Black RZ 6 Speed Twin Turbo, ABS, LSD, Aircon, PAS, E/W, E/M, CD stereo, Leather rear seats, cloth RZ front seats. TO4R Turbine kit, front mounted intercooler, oil cooler, adjustable suspension, 18 inch WORK VS alloys, HKS exhaust"

Being my first supe, I obviosuly dont want to be bogged down with problems - and Ive heard so many stories of single turbo' d supe's either blow the turbos, or have been incorrectly regulated? I cant really afford 3-4k for a new turbo you see :-)

Has anyone here got a T04R turbine? Whats it like as a daily runner? Or do you reckon Id be better off with the standard sequential turbo setup - being my first one and all that? Im well into this one, but there are others out there that are more or less standard and may potentially give less problems to me.

Thanks for any help :)

Paul.

Think you've hit the nail on the heard there!

What is the est/proven power of this and what sort of money is it going for, and the actual milage? We can then give you a bit more help.

BTW - most tuners in Japan reset the odometers once big engine upgrades have been completed, the very low mileage may be down to this.

Best Regards

Gaz.

Hi Gaz, thanks for the help.

Here is the spec:

1993 Black RZ 6 Speed Twin Turbo: 27000KM (16875 miles), ABS, LSD, Aircon, PAS, E/W, E/M, CD stereo, Leather rear seats, cloth RZ front seats. TO4R Turbine kit, front mounted intercooler, oil cooler, adjustable suspension, 18 inch WORK VS alloys, HKS exhaust. ALL IN PRICE £14000

I have been offered REALLY low mileage Supe's before, e.g. 19k miles on an L plate in an aution in Japan, from a very reputable importer down south - so I just thought this was another one of them - though in the past when Ive been offerd them I thought Id best wait for one with a few mods. Hindsight eh lol?

I dont know about the power it throws out, havent really asked about that, was more concerned initially about history and who actually carried the upgrade out. Ive asked the person about the mileage already - i.e. can he check its genuine - and am waiting on a response. It does seem weird for such a low mileage car to have had ALL of these mods, but thats probably just the cynic in me coming out!

You are right to seek out more history on it. Mileage aside, there is a lot to consider with big single Supras. What sort of fueling system has it got, what ECU/mapping has been done etc.

Do a search for 'single turbo' to get an idea of what spec it should have...

Yes, for a J-SPEC with a T-04R there should be quite a lot more done. Specifically fuelling in a big way. Most T-04's are pushing 700+HP if tuned correctly. There is no way a stock jap fuel system can handle that, nor without mapping / ECU work done.

Like everyone else said, you should definitely look into more information about the car. You dont want to buy into someone else's troubles if the work was not done right.

The price on a T-04R with appropriate mods to support it should be well above the asking price of that, which would make me suspicious. Also, you said yourself you couldnt afford to replace a 3k turbo itself.. but there is so much more to worry about when you get into those HP figures. I guess it just depends what youre comfortable with. Take your time when shopping for your Supe!

Good luck.

Thank you very much for your help all. Im starting to wonder whether its such a good idea to go for the big turbo as a first car as I dont *really* understand it all :stupid: as well as I probably should!

Thinking the sequential standard setup may be a better way to go now... in fairness the guy has offered me some crackers but it was the low mileage (first) and the big single (second) that got my attention. Ive been looking for a low mileage supe (I know they go to 300k km!!) for 6 months now, so this was like all my Christmas's coming at once!

Ive asked a few more questions about the fueling setup and whats been done to as regards engine mapping, but the more I think about it, the worse idea this becomes lol, and the better idea it is to go for one with stock turbos. At least theyre cheaper to replace if anythng goes wrong!

Ive been sensibly advsied to go for a standard and do the work myself (well, pay someone here to do it) as I know who has done what, and where. I reckon this would be ideal, and if the car hadnt have had a big single already fitted Id have bitten his hand off on mileage alone, but as Supraguy says, I dont really want to buy other peoples problems.

The car is from a dealer called "K's Auto" in Japan incidentally and the guy I am going through has a very good reputation, (he's sorted a few guys on here) and its not meant as a slight on him, more my ingorance I guess.

I don't want to piss on your fire, but without knowing all the necessary details, I would leave it. You may have stumbled upon a properly set-up bargain, but if not, its going to cost you.

Bear in mind that a decent, full single turbo conversion with all the ancilliaries would be about the same price as the car in question. Proper mapping alone will set you back somewhere in the region of a grand.

What about insurance, i'd be interested to know if you have been quoted on this Supra?

There are usually some nice, mildly modded supras for sale on this site. Check the private for sale section and the dealers area.

Thanks John, if the truth be known, then no Im not used to RWD cars at all as Ive never owned one.

Reckon Id be best with another one now... with standard setup etc. There is a royal sapphire blue (sorry guys who have already got this!!) with 38k with a few mods - looks like a better idea for a first Supe?

"Blue-Metallic RZ 6 Speed Twin Turbo: 60000KM (37500 miles), ABS, LSD, PAS, Aircon, E/W, E/M, leather rear seats, cloth RZ front seats, 18 inch AVS alloys, Abflug bonnet, Top Secret nose and side skirts, aftermarket exhaust, roll cage, aftermarket suspension, dumpvalve. All in price £14050 (incl. your bits)"

Ill keep looking anyway. Thanks again everyone for all your help and input!
