mark.supra
My air conditioning has stopped working and a mobile unit will re gas it for £75,but they can only do it if it is a R134 but they said most imports like mine are a R12 and cant be re gassed. As they still charge £75 even if they can't do it ,does anyone know how to find out what sort it is? My Supra is a 1994 n/a jap import...CHEERS:Pling:
ardasaliah
check in the engine bay. should have a sticker somewhere. look near the charge nipples. If it r134a gas then get a recharge kit from ebay for about £25.
markssupra
You should have a sticker somewhere under the bonnet. My 93 is R134a so yours should be too. DO NOT let them put R12 in it as it is not compatible and will cause serious damage. Also R12 is illegal now IIRC.

SUPRALOOPY
Has anyone used one of these kits and if so can a complete novice like me be capable of re gassing my Supra? Get it done properly. I can see alot of very unhappy people cos of these halfrauds things. Also you weigh in a percentage of oil to gas too.
ardasaliah
I use them all the time- Just add 600g of r134a- and a small can of pag oil. Then say every 4 your years get it serviced properly. My car has got 150,000 miles on it and the aircon blows like the artic. "Touch wood"
merckx
Mine hasn't worked well for some time now. I bought the refil kit and gauge from Halfords last Sunday, it was very very easy to use. Make sure you fill at the low pressure port near the bulkhead. It's lovely and cold now!

Daston
lol is there no way of telling before then and when it does run out does it do any damage?
squiffy
yes it can do damage, mainly the compressor, but low pressure safety switch will hopefully do its job!
squiffy
how do you know when your low on gas? there is a sight glass next to the high side connection, (at the front of the engine bay on the middle) if it is empty or bubbling then you need gas, should be running clear. look just after you turn on ac and it should bubble then clear
Terminator
The sight glass, should be checked at ITRO 2000 rprm with air con set to full lowest temp setting. After 30 secons or so the sight glass will run clear of bubbles if the sytem is chaged fully. There will always be some bubbles or milkyness when first switched on. All MKIV and most imports use R134 a, the Japs were using it long before we did. R12 is not availalble, legally, so any aircon place that offers it is best avioded. If you allow your air con to run down so it is not usable you will shorten its life. Use it every day and it will maintain pressure very well. The Ebay/halfords kits are OK if your system is low, most have oil in them as well, but you can not check the system pressure, so not a good idea for reqular maintenance.
