sarjo
Has anyone steam cleaned their own engine before. Mine isnt grimey, its just looking a little 'off colour' and needs cheering up a bit. Any advice as theres a lot of electrical stuff under that lid?
Daston
I think its just a case of getting lots of plastic bags and cable ties and covering all the electrical parts
mikeyb10supra
be carefull of gaskets as well on j-specs as they sometimes melt away
sarjo
Thanks for that. I remember doing my Honda a few years back. After bagging the 'dont get' bits I was left with hardly anything to clean.
Dragonball
DO NOT DO IT IF AN N/A - Coils go bang! Highly recommend you dont do it on a TT either mind you!
mikeyb10supra
gunk, a damp cloth and some brasso for the aluminium bits is the best oh and some graft, its a hard job
Chris Wilson
I steam cleaned my own Supra TT engine at least 10 times, and my skyluine engine has been done as many, if not more times. Just dry it all out straight away, and avoild prolonged aggresive jetting of electrical bits. NEVER had an issue if dried out immediately. Caveat, I use "Steam Clean" in the same incorrect way as 90% of people, as in I hot water deteregent washed my engines. A true steam clean is superheated steam, and will remove paint, insulation wrapping, blah blah.
uk-rich
i used plenty of gunk engine cleaner, sprayed on, then gave it a good scrub with a brush. then rinse off with a hose pipe set on mist, this way it avoids the strong direct jet, which can cause electrical probs
sarjo
I was going to use gunk and my steam cleaner - it works on my oven - , minus the gunk of course
Ben-san
Jo, I believe that Meguairs have a foam-like product that is safe to use across all engine bay materials, bar electricals. I've been looking for the stuff myself. B

RedM
Ok. That got me back for my comment the other day I must of missed that. I just had visions of people crawling under Supras with boiling kettles.

sarjo
OOOhhhhhh some good advice there. Think I might stay with the 'not new' look. Will look out for that Meguirs stuff though, and will try gunk and elbow grease instead for now.
