Any Fighters / Martial Artists out there?

I do kickboxing, on and off for several years now. Not into it in a big way, but it does keep me fit, flexible and I enjoy the sparring (not very good at it though, but what the hell!) I'm not particularly motivated by moving up the belt system.

I first went because a firend of mine wanted to try it and she didn't want to go on her own. I suprised myself by liking it, and stuck with it.

The club I go to operates in 3 or 4 venues in Hampshire/Sussex/Surrey, and is pretty informal.

SonicSoop: you'd be surprised, in many clubs there's a good range of ages etc. We get new people come in fairly regularly in our club. One or two ex-boxers there who are good to spar with.

I have a black belt in Shotokan karate and used to be an instructor for a university club, and then occasionally for a club local to me.

I also have a black belt in a style of karate called Phoenix, which no one has ever heard of because there were only ever two clubs in the world... One in Paris and one in Weston-super-Mare (where I used to live). Neither club exists any more.

I've also done jujitsu, tae kwon do and shorinji kempo.

I'd rate jujitsu and kempo as good real combat martial arts. Karate is great for technique, fitness and discipline with approximately a 50:50 split between punching and kicks. Tae kwon do is much more heavily biased towards kicking, but technique is generally lacking. Before you all jump down my throat about the flagrant sweeping statement about tae kwon do, I should point out that it doesn't really matter what martial art you do... If you have a good instructor, you will generally be a good student. It just so happens that tae kwon do instructors *tend* to not place much emphasis on technique!

I don't do any martial arts any more because the pull of the sofa is much stronger.

i did ITF taekwondo and got to 1st dan, also did Rapid Arnis for a year two with some brazilian jui jitsu here and there

since starting work havent had the time or energy and as a result put on a lot of weight

planning to lose the weight and get back into it.

tried getting back into TKD recently whilst overweight but it wasnt happening, its like during sparring in my mind i knew what i used to be able to do and wanted to do, but my body wasnt able to any more, thats why gonna lose the weight first then get back into it properly

Do Judo, Unarmed combat (learnt it off my Dad who used to teach it in the army) and also personal self defence (usful when out on the town)

I find that other martial arts have too many health and safty stuff you cant actualy practice it propaly at least with judo you can have a good workout and throw another guy around as hard as you want

i agree , judo is regarded as a soft martial art but it is not! getting to grips with someone trying to choke you out is not really soft.

i enjoyed it for a couple of years and was regarded as pretty usefull but gave it up to concentrate on my powerlifting. however i now train self defence ju jitsu which is a very good easy to learn way of defending yourself without years of difficult to learn moves. my super strength from powerlifting makes me very effective on the ground i simply cant be held down even by guys 4 stone heavier than me

I am faded-red-belt Tai-Phoon, which involves learning the art of defeating opponents with my overpowering wind.

Would love to try Jiu-Jitsu, but my american football career put paid to any plans of having a working body these days! :stretch:

ultimate fighter aight but the real deal is UFC, they are what you call the best of the best

I got excited when I saw the Bravo thing (I'd not seen any UF before), but then it basically turned into a very violent version of Neighbours...

Where can this UFU be found? Sky Sports?

Me and the wife are currently studying Zen Dan Kwan out here in Oz. It's a mixture of Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido. She also studies kick boxing and boxing.

Back home in the uk we study Wu Shu Kwan.

Black belt (1st dan) Chinese kickboxing here.

Wu Shu Kwan?

IDO, I've trained in Wing Chun for a while now. I've taken a break due to a knee injury... it keeps dislocating on squats, not ideal in horse or goat stance really! :haha:

I've started self training to compensate for the lost time, hopefully I won't mislead myself in the process. It's hard finding a Wing Chun sparring partner without the class itself.
