DIY aircon recharge

Has anyone had any experience with the DIY aircon re-gas kits on ebay?

Just bought one as they are only £30 inc postage. Anyone used them before, good or bad news? Also, where is the valve to top up through....I don't want to connect to the high pressure valve and blow the can up in my face!

£20 in Halfruads

Got one on Friday Martin.

Unfortunately there is a twist...

On the can it says, "Always use an interdynamics A.C. gauge to avoid overcharging."....Buggered me completely. Couldn't read the small print on the can in the shop as I am long-sighted..

However I was speaking to someone and they said, before you try the charging run the A.C at max-cold, max-fan for 10-15 minutes..

Anyway I cleaned the filters (vacuum and then threw them in the washing machine) and then did as he said.

No need to recharge now....Nice and cold and smells much better....:)

I have a Soarer guys.

My filters are under the glove box (on-yer-back-look up-'n-under).

If yoiu have a similar system you will see either two or four butterfly nuts. Remove them and you will see the bottom of the forst filter. It slides down and is hinged halfway down so you can angle it up so you don't foul the foorwell carpet. The second filter need to be slid into the same position as the first one and then you can pull it down to remove it..

Of course, yours could be totally different....:)

The air conditioner filters tend to get fairly clogged up from the Japanese smog and heavy smoking i

Right.....kit arrived 25 mins ago....air is now ICE cold!

I can't belive all I had to do was put this in the car and its fixed. Took a total of 5 mins and that includeds the 3 minutes engine warm up the directions required. The gas running past the level check window at the front of the engine bay is a bit white and bubbly but thats because I put 340g of gas in (full tin) and the supra needs 500g-750g. Quick trip to halfords I reckon as that have the gass on the website for £15. I could order more gas off ebay for £6 but I want to get it sorted. so wuick tip, if you want to give a full charge buy 2 cans at once as its only about £2 extra if bought in a set and no extra postage if you do it that way!

But for all of you thinking these kits are crap due to all the bad press they get, I would ignore it (and did) as it worked perfectly for me! Also remember that the americans call them 'death kits'....I think this must just be the old R12 kits for pre '93 cars. The reason being that you can get the high and low pressure valves mixed up on them, attach the can to the high pressure and it blows up in your face!! you can't on the new gas type as the valves are different.

All round thumbs up from me.

Whilst these kits will get you back running again. They will not test for leaks. My air con guy charges me £30 and puts a sniffer in the car and runs one over all the joints, pipes and condenser. If you find your self needing to refill in a few months get the system checked.

My system had not been charge since I got the car 5 years ago, I have not neen driving it much and the person who is driving it has not used the air con, it needed a charge last week end:(

yeah there maybe leaks, but I wanted to go the cheap option first and hope it sorts it out.

The car is 12 years old, and I have no idea if it has ever been charged before. At the standard rate of 5-10% gas loss per year it should be expected that it is empty after 12 years, so I hope there are no leaks :)
