andrew7
Martin, A leak in the main cooler core could induce a significant problem into the engine. If you suspect anything better not to keep driving the car as your EGT's will be higher than normal (not good).... Go here for further basic info which should clarify why they are so important to the wellbeing of your engine: http://www.steves.co.za/Intercoolers.html
RedM
I don't think I have leak in my IC. I was just enquiring about the effects of old ICs. There is a wealth of info about why they are great and what they do but not much about what happens when they are old/fail/etc. other than 'buy a new one'. Most of my driving is off boost and on long trip on the M-way I tend to go steady.
Dragonball
When Jon's SMIC needed replacing we put one of my 2 Row FMIC's on his and did a before and after dyno I seem to remember (and I dont have the figures in front of me now) that he made a 20HP gain straight away If interested I will hopefully be posting up some info later that might interest you Picture below is my uprated SMIC that I have on my car http://miami-gt.co.uk/images/smic.jpg
Ian C
When your turbos compress the air it also heats it up. The intercooler takes out most of that heat. If your intercooler isn't working properly, it takes out less and less heat - pretty much none of it once all your fins have crumbled away. A hot intake charge not only loses you power (much less dense air) but can also cause detonation. So it's pretty bad. If you ran no intercooler at all you probably wouldn't be able to boost past 0.5bar with blowing your engine up. -Ian
Ark
I've measured a drop in boost pressure over the last few days, with the ambient temperatures going up. Time to think about replacing / upgrading my tatty old SMIC.
Elliot
Hmmm, my EGTs have gone up a fair bit recently (only on motorway), and I'm sure the pressure has as well. Getting worried now! I know everyone talks about the fins crumbling, but would they literally flake off in your hand if they were knackered?
Ian C
Yes, they are extremely fragile when on their last legs. You can gently push your finger into the fins and they just flake and crumble out of the way. It's a bizarre experience. -Ian
RedM
Mine is soft (oo-er). The fins feel like manky bananas. Fingers crossed Chris Wilson gets his delivery soon.

bignum
my first sign of a knackered cooler was in france last year, the weather was boiling like 40 d/c and even on stock boost i was detting as the 2nd tubby come on, so it was tootle home and get on the phone to mr wilson, you wont half notice a difference when you get the new i/c on. Yes, that's right - had it nearly 2 years now & loved every minute of it! Do you know Alan, or the car? It is indeed a Blitz FMIC I've got, haven't checked the fins yet, totally slipped my mind. It's due in for a service on Wednesday so will get them to check it over then.
