Coops Posted June 8, 2006 Share Posted June 8, 2006 Hi Guys and Gals Due to ill health my 93 Jap Import NA has been sat in my garage for about three years. It has not been started/turned over for this long. As my health has improved I need to rescue it from rusting away and get it all up and running again. It's not too bad from the outside, bit of mould in the cabin and all tyres still have air in them. I don't want to just buy a new battery, wire it up and hit the starter so could any of you advise me of what steps I should take to be as safe as possible BEFORE trying to start it. In the olden days I would have removed the plugs and turned it over by hand to check for seizure and changed all the fluids but I understand it's not that easy with the newer models. I used to be an aircraft engineer so not a stranger to wielding a spanner and big hammers even though computer keyboards are now the tools of my trade! Any advice would be gratefully received. wkdtime Posted June 8, 2006 Share Posted June 8, 2006 Mate change the fluids, check condition of ignition components, and give it a crank, it may start, most likely start smoking, missing, etc as the ECU will start to learn it will sort it self out. my mate had his MR2 turbo parked for 2 years, after doing the above it started but took a while for the crap to clear up and the car to idle normally. absz Posted June 8, 2006 Share Posted June 8, 2006 my car sat in the garage for a few years. firstly i changed engine oil and coolant on the motor, removed plugs disconnected the crank sensor to stop it firing up. poured small amount of oil into bores (incase of a sticking piston ring) cranked engine over until oil pressure light went out,then refitted plugs&sensor. the trouble with mine was as it sat for such a long period the fuel injectors were all sticking causing over fuelling. and it will not fire up on all six. had to replace injectors:( Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Rob Posted June 8, 2006 Share Posted June 8, 2006 I'd be careful with the tyres once you get it running.They'll be flat-spotted and possibly cracked. Trundle along to a friendly tyre place and don't tell them it was parked up for 3 years to see what they say. As above, change all fluids including brake fluid. ManwithSupra Posted June 8, 2006 Share Posted June 8, 2006 If its been standing for a long time don’t forget to change the coolant run it for 500 miles then change it again, any "settlement" or rust particles will be pushed around the water pump and could damage it over time. I know it’s annoying but it’s the best way. Also do the same with the oil, if it has settled all of the oil may of drained from the cams and upper parts of the engine and over the period of time steel being steel attracts surface rust which is “abrasive” and could cause issues later with regards to advancing engine wear. I would also say take it easy when you first start it up with new fluids let it idle for a little while so to let all the oil get in the working parts and drive it normally for about 200miles i.e dont blat it.
