16k starting salary? :(

Hahaha I could possibly do English out of those but it's not my specialist subject. What age range would that be? Do you get more for primary or senior kinda thing?

Primary for some bizarre reason is really oversubscribed. You have to teach every subject and marking will become your life. 16k is a training salary that goes up to 20 odd when you are qualified then there are all manner of points and increments. The point is its very enjoyable and the holidays are all paid and awesomely long

She could, but we live on the west coast so it's quite a slog. Also, no schools around here would employ her with out a decent level of spoken welsh.

She's done basic welsh, but no further. She only got her current job (dispensary manager) because she was learning welsh, once she got the job she packed in the lessons.

I should add that neither of us are welsh.

same for secondary?

It probably wouldn't help that I hate kids though?

Don't you have a lot of 'teacher training' days throughout the summer hols? And have to do lesson plans and stuff?

Only training days right at the beggining or more usually right at the end of each holiday. Hating kids not the best reason to start teaching, Lesson plans to begin with but not as important once you know whats going on.

It is not as important, but still desirable.

She had heart set on primary teaching anyway.

I admire those guys in primary, little kids drive me mad. I prefere the older kids. they've got loads of attitude and great fun to teach. There is no age restriction on teaching so she could still do it alot later on if you move. (could still always learn the welsh)

True, she is 48 though so the clock is ticking.

I jest, she's 22 so you are totally right. No rush. Everyone says she would make a good primary school teacher (lots of patience ;)). TBH, I think they will have to review the welsh policy as there is very few teachers coming through the system.

She's on about going into Pharmacy now, 5 years at uni

Unfortunately the point for me is that I have a mortgage to pay and debt from Uni the first time round :( not even 20k a year would cover that

I reckon it would be a brill "second income" job if you know what I mean, ie one partner earns more than the other, one has a teaching job that fits in around the kids with the holidays and stuff.

I think I'm too old to re-train in something now.

See i would hate to be the partner that is always off 6 weeks in the summer etc because you wouldn't ever see the other one. Mike's sister and brother in law are both teachers so they get all the holidays together which works out well with their kids too.

I presume primary is oversubscribed because people think it's easier teaching younger children than teenagers.

The only reason i'd do it is for the holidays. I don't mind kids but germs eww no thanks.

Rosie, you're never too old to re-train. I suspose it's going into a different profession on less money which is the killer though.

doesn't sound like they manage time too badly!!

can't complain in that respect. They pay is low for the type of work but high compared to many other jobs too, so that is good.

I just wish they could stop interfering sometimes and let us do what is best.

'Managers' = promoted to their level of incompetance ;)

Well, I agree I could learn new skills but what I won't have is the X number of years experience and could never catch up on if you see what I mean.

But yes, it's really the money thats a killer.

I know exactly what I'm doing here......I'm busting a gut, collecting ulcers and destroying my eye-sight in a heroic attempt to make some rich people even richer.

I hate Fridays, cos I have to wait two days before I can get back to work...I'm lovin it.

I just had a thought. I might go on some visits today and try to get people signed up on monthly contracts. It seems people always ask me if I offer a flat-rate monthyl thing, and I say I never got round to working something out and just bill on an ad-hoc basis, but then when I mention the idea later they're not so keen. Maybe I should charge more. Ho hum.

Yes - that is the answer. Steady money coming in then, just don't over promise on the reaction times in case two go at once.

Get yourself MS ceritified whilst you're at it too. It's cheap enough if you self study.

Starting salary for a teacher now is 19.5k. I started on under 14 ten years ago but quickly moved up the scale. I would say though that teaching is a vocation, not really something you choose to do, more the job chooses you. My mates used to say those that can do, those that cant teach!! Buggers!!

Having said that though, after ten years I'm now looking for something else, but what else pays me over 30k a year and gives me 13 weeks holiday a year???
