Charcoal cannister

How does it work? I've got an idea, but would like it confirmed. Also should I keep it when I go big TT?

 

Also whilst on the subject of keeping stuff, the pressure tank. Is this effectively some kind of buffer? I'm pretty sure this is going....

Charcoal cannister takes the pressure from the fuel tank as it warms up & releases it to the atmosphere without all the nasty petrol vapour coming out. Best to keep it, as I don't know what will happen if you take it all out. Could end up with a pressurised tank or fuel flowing out of the pipes???

 

Is the pressure tank you mean the turbo actuator presure tank?? If so & you're going sequential big TT you'll need it. If you're going true twin (both on line together) no need for it.

Actually it doesn't. It stores vapour until the ECU decides to purge it back into the intake, which it does via a VSV. It doesn't go to atmosphere, the pipe that goes to atmosphere it there to draw fresh air in when it purges, not the other way round.

 

The pressure tank is only there to pressurise the VSVs that control the sequential operation.

Do you know which VSV is used to purge it back to the tank. Am pretty sure my AEM will not be doing this, but seeing as I'm about to free up a load of outputs, I may set it up so that it works as per Toyota wanted it to.

It doesn't purge back to the tank, it goes into the intake and through the engine. The VSV is on the intake side of the engine down by the rear somewhere. It's called the EVAP VSV according to the tech manual.

Yeah, lots of people have. It's basically there for emissions, you can't have any petrol vapour venting to atmosphere. That's also why the petrol tank is kept under vacuum rather than positive pressure.

Doesn't that make an enormous mess when changing the filter? Not sure I'd be happy with it upside down.

 

think about it, no pressure, hole at bottom .... wheres the oil gonna go :p :D

 

wont be much oil left in there mate and with a rag around the bottom none would escape as it would be trapped in the filter paper

I ditched it and used the extra space to installed the oil filter relocation kit

 

Looks like the ebay kit that I bought, did that come with the cooler too? What filter did you find to fit it and do you not find the metal bracket a little flimsy?

 

As for the charcoal canister, route the tank vent to the one in the inner wing, and cap or remove the pipe that goes to the intake. I removed the intake pipe completely and made it a load tidier.

nope not ebay, it s Greddy kit bought from a trader on here all plumbed in with an oil cooler kit with the helpful instrctions posted by SimonB (cheers).

 

not sure about the bracket yet as it seems fine. there are two threaded holes just in the inner wing perfect for mounting it.

 

Oh and not had any problems with changing the filter, as WSB2 said gravity does most of the work and whats remaining you just have to quickly flip the filter and hay presto :) two miniute job to do the filter and no getting on your back to change the filter.

 

someone (sorry cant remember the PM) finally told me the MGTF filter fits perfectly and it does.

hmmm with that oil filter relocation kit. If the filter drains out after a while of standing doesn't it just prolong the filter priming time and cause your engine to run for longer without oil pressure on start up?

 

I thought that was why the filter was normally carefully arranged to be upsidedown and why it was good advice to prime the filter with oil during an oil change...??

Did it look like the attached then? How much did you pay for it?

 

thats the bad boy, although I changed the piping to a set of cutom pipes to include a oil stat so the oil cooler only comes in when the oil gets hot.

 

Think it was around the £150 mark as they had a deal on at the time, if i remember correctly it was from Endless Racing Designs, although they didnt renew their trading licence but are still going.

well i've alway had constant positive oil pressure when starting the car, although dont know how much that really means but it shouldnt drain completely becasue the system is semi-pressurised. like the idea of when draining the oil it only flows freely then you take the cap off. i'll probably find out in a few months whether i'm talking bollocks. although i've seen other cars with this setup run fine???

Hate to tell you this then, but it isn't a Greddy one, they are around the 350-450 mark, the one you have is from an ebay trader called anewdigital (http://www.anewdigital.com) the kits sell for around £135. Does the job though as I have one on mine.
