Rob
Why, why why is everything so bloody difficult? I've got 2 laptops side by side, joined with a x-over patch cable, both PCs say the connection is there and working at 100Mbs, but I can't connect the two and swap files. Arrgggghhhhhh, it's been a day and a half now. Gates, you b@st#rd, why are you so f### rich?

edd_t
are you running XP Home or Pro? I think this sort of networking is only available in Pro isnt it? might be wrong... would also try using static IP addess's and NO default gateway...
JustGav
Domain networking is only on Pro, however filesharing will work on Home.. Check network settings first by pinging... then check the firewall settings to ensure that you are allowing fire sharing thru it.. Check you have got the folder shared... n00b
you can set it up to run on home its just more of a ass ache... make sure they are both set to the same domain its hard to explain but i had to type the physical address to connect to mine e.g. \\TheWorkgroupName\TheSharedFolderName\ you could also try to map a new network drive in folder view go to "Tools> Map Network Drive" type the path to the other shared folder like above, then under that click "connect using a different user name" in the pop up box enter the username and password you use on the computer your trying to connect to.... well this has worked for me in the past ... and your right about bill gates lol good luck n00b

Gamer
Just set up an FTP server on one and transfer files like that if you are pressed for time. Bulletproof FTP server works a charm.
Rob
Ah now, the connection is firewalled. How do I Ping? Both PCs have the same network name, I presume this is the domain. I though I could just browse one pc from the other and copy all the files I want straight over. It also says stuff about connection not being found, and admin access rights. I really don't know what I'm doing, I'm just trying to avoid spending £60 on a backup USB drive.
Rob
Ah, one is XP Home and one is XP Pro. Could this be the problem?
imi
Rob. You can file share between windows. so no need to buy that USB drive. Once you manage to do it once, you wont look back so patience is a virtue. Forget about domains...not relevant. can you ping each laptop - command prompt ping 10.10.10.1 (assuming thats the ip address of the other laptop) if you can ping, and you are sure that the windows firewall or any other one for that matter is switched off. on the 2nd laptop, right click on the folder you want to share and share it. click on start and run and type in \\10.10.10.1\ and it should show you the shared folder, you clikc on that and it should ask you for a username and password Its very straight forward......once you get through the initial hurdle, its a doddle. Lewis
rob, if you fancy a drive then pop it round and I'll sort it. I don't know where you are based but I am in oxford if it isn't too much of a trek for you
BASHTHEBISHOP
Disable the firewall and make sure you have shared the folders. You ping by using dos. Easiest way - goto start, the run, type 'cmd' and dos window will open. Type 'ping' then a space followed by the network address of the opposite PC. i.e. 'ping 10.128.170.65' If you get 3 lines back saying reply reply reply then the PC's can see each other which should be the case having disabled your firewall. Should be just a case of sharing your folders properly. If you have just goto start run & type \\pc name\foldername if window/folder opens you have cracked it. Goodluck - hope this helps sry didnt see imi's response
Rob
Gaahh, my heads bleeding now. Ok the ping worked both ways, the firewalls are disabled, as is the virus protection. The C drives on both pcs are shared across the network. Now one of the pcs is saying "Logon failure; the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer" Thanks for all help so far guys. Rob
The other pc can use this PC to connect to the internet through a gateway, so they definitely must be connected.
BASHTHEBISHOP
you could try the following link as it seems to make sense but to be honest you are reaching the lmits of my small amount of knowledge:- http://www.computing.net/networking/wwwboard/forum/28985.html
Rob
It never worked, so I threw both laptops out the bleeding window, including this one that I'm typing on right now. Thanks for trying to help people, I guess I should have known when our senior IT guy said "it's quite tricky" So I'll leave where I started, f####ing windows. Rob
Thanks, but I can't be driving down there for this, or let you have it for a day or two in Leeds. I really should get a backup drive anyway because nothing is backed up for years. Plus secretly I think you're trying to lure me into a trap and you're going to bum me.
