Supra ST Myster
just recently on my auto when pulling away from a standing start with it in drive and foot on brake, when releasing the brake pedal i get a groaning noise from the brakes, also especailly when i have put it into reverse and then brake then into drive to go off forward i get a groaing noise, any ideas what may be causing this?? Supra ST Myster
no one shed any light on this.?? Noticed today that when on full the boost the warning triangle came on as did the handbrake light, both at the same time then went out about 3sceconcs after, did this twice both on full boost, could the noise be that the handbrake isnt releasing properly and in affect still trying to clamp the brakes while just gently pull away lifting off the brake pedal slowly? Can someone check when the engine is on how far the hand brake goes up before the warning light and hand brake light come on please as mine comes on as you lift it about 2cm up from its resting position? cheers

I would seriously doubt it mate. I take it you have a boost gauge etc in yours? If so what is it reading? Sounds like the warning lights may be due to the full boost rather than the brakes. Also is the noise coming form the front or rear? Ben..
Supra ST Myster
running .8-.9 bar, if it was a boost issue why would the handbake light come on as well?? just seems it like i was putting the handbrake up while in drive. Comming from the fronts, very loud as i say if i put it in drive and handbrake down and slowly lift off the brake pedal it groans like anything!! Scooter
sticking semi seized caliper? just guessing....... any loss of brake performance. Maybe try a few hard stops in a row, see if it pulls left or right?
Rob
Without me referring to the handbook, if the handbrake and triangle light come on it means low brake fluid. If at full boost I presume you mean under full acceleration, then the fluid would be moving about in the reservoir. Try some heavy braking to see if the lights come on then as well. Don't know about the groaning though.
Soonto_HAS_soop
I thought that the handbrake and the warning triangle are the same thing?? I could be wrong though. By saying 0.8-0.9bar I take it that you have a boost gauge, not "It's standard, so it must be ....."??? If the noise is coming from the fronts, why do you think that it would be related to the handbrake? The handbrake works from the rears so that "almost" removes that possibility. Have you checked your front pads lately?? I'm not sure how the MkIV does it (if at all) but could it be a brake pad wear indicator that is flashing up??? Ben.. Rob
I don't think the Supra has an electronic brake pad wear indicator, it relies on the aural indicator.
Supra ST Myster
yeah there is also a small light to the right of the fuel gauge that lights up when you lift the handbrake, good point about the fronts, doh!! i will have to check that it is the rears or fronts makeing the noise with someone standing outside and listening, will also check fluids in the morning and brake hard a few times to see what happens, thanks for the input,, got a boost gauge fitted so know its that reading.. A semi seized caliper could be a possibility, but personally I would of thought that you would notice it more often than you have described. Best to get someone to check whether front or rear, and left or right, then take apart and inspect. Ben..
Supra ST Myster
right, the fluid level was low which is why the warning light came up, so topped that up, the noise is comming from the front brakes for sure as had someone stand outside while slowly releasing off the brakes while in drive. It as though they are not letting go of the brakes quick enough, any idea why this may be?
Soonto_HAS_soop
That sounds like the caliper could be just about to seize, and is in it's very early stages on completely seizing. The only real way to tell is to take the caliper off and inspect it. If it is seizing then you may be able to get away with a refurb kit. If it does need a refurb kit, then do both sides. Ben.. Supra ST Myster
cheers for the info, upon taking the caliper off, how do i know if its wrong by looking at it? If the piston isnt going all the way in or something?
Soonto_HAS_soop
If it's seized, then it's more than likely something like the rubber seal has perished or has allowed something in, i.e. water. If this is the case, then you will see corrosion or weaping around the offending seal. If one has gone, and if the piston is ok and not completely fooked, then a rebuild kit should be ok. If not, then it could be a new piston or even a new caliper. Ben..
roscodav
Your pretty much there already however I had the exact same symptoms.. I checked into a garage and low and behold.... partially siezed Calliper. The groaning was very hard to locate as it resonates around the car but I would say it sounded more like it was coming from the front but it was the passenger side rear that was knackered... so you cant always tell.
