lust2luv
The last 'B' service I had at my local Toyota dealer they noted that my fuel filter was an aftermarket product, so it wasn't replaced. Does this sound plausible, or is it likely they just ordered the wrong part number in, so didn't have one to fit? I'm getting another service with them on Thursday, should I insist they change it, even if I do indeed have an aftermarket fuel filter (surely not a performance mod?!) Thanks in advance for any help. michael
When I had my service they charged me for the labour to change mine but didn't bother doing it - I noticed this and kicked up a fuss, turned out they didn't do it because they didn't have one in stock - they didn't bother telling me though - Grrr! I can't see what there problem is with the filter anyway, surely it's no really problem to remove it and put a new one on - they really do amaze me, fools the lot of 'em! It's probably some policy where they are only allowed to work on Toyota parts to teach us a lesson
Chris Wilson
I have never seen an aftermarket filter from other than a reputable source, for the MKIV. They can be a bastard to change though, as people seem to often overtighten the flare fitting on the tank end, spread the flare, and the thing seizes up as it's undone. Can require awkward repair work with specialised tooling. If it looks quite new I'd leave well alone!
lust2luv
Perhaps that's why they left it alone last time! Has been untouched for last 3 services now, so would have been on there for at least 4 years if I don't get it changed this service. Guess that can't be a good thing? (n.b. I have no clue what it actually does, I only ever use Optimax, is a new fuel filter really necessary with such fuels? (technical dunce, so may be missing the point of just what it does!)) Chris Wilson
It should then be changed. If they have done a lot of them they will have more chance of removing it without damaging the pipework, there are tricks of the trade which one picks up the hard way
lust2luv
Cheers Chris, I'll make sure they change it and hope they know what they're doing... at a Toyota dealership... oh shite!! For £600 they had better get it right ('B' service, platinum plug change, timing belt and valve clearance check, doesn't include brake fluid change, transmission oil or coolant change!) BTW they said that if the valve clearance was off, it couldn't be corrected on my model, they'd have to order replacement shims and the labour alone would be £240, does that sound BS? Chris Wilson
It can be corrected, but would need shims changing. If they were to do them all at that price it's a good deal. I buy all thick ones and grind them to suit what I need on the surface grinder. Toyota rarely have many sizes in stock. I doubt many heads in the UK have ever been re shimmed. I sent one to Hong Kong a while back, but i used ground down thickm ones on that, Toyota only had 5 sizes in stock.

I wouldn't worry to much about the valve clearances. I had mine checked at 54000 miles and they were all well within tolerance. However, do verify that the cost of the check is included in the service (it isn't on later model Toyotas, but for cars of the Supra's ages it was) and also they should record the clearance figures on a sheet. When they take you through the paperwork, ask to see the sheet - don't pre-warn them beforehand!
