weird rubber burning smell

far

Recommended Posts

Over the last few days I have had a weird smell of what can be best described as burning rubber coming from underneath the car what seems like under the drivers seat,I am thinking that

A - I did scrape the bottom of my exhaust the other day coming off a steep incline and one of the rubber holder things has come away and is touching a hot part of the car

B - I have dropped a bit of hose when installing my silicone hose kit somewhere in the engine bay and this is getting hot and melting.

C - Something major has gone wrong.

The smell was really bad to start with when I first noticed it and seemed to be coming from the engine bay when I lifted the bonnet,it is now really hardly noticable unless you bend down and smell underneath the car.

I will of course get down to a garage and get the car on a ramp - just thought someone else may have had a similiar experience or shed some light on this ?

cheers

Your option 'A' sounds most likely.

None of your exhaust should touch the car's body or the rubber supports that hold the exhaust brackets. You may have forced the exhaust to come into contact with one of the rubber supports.

cheers dude - I will check it out once its on a ramp although the smell seems to come from under the drivers seat and most of the rubber things are towards the back ? and also I htink I only scraped the back end of the exhaust - we will see

Any other suggestions people ?

Stop wheelspinning mate!:D

My car had the same thing when I first bought it and I phoned the guy I bought it from who was going to have a look at it the next weekend.

Before that time cam it just stopped, what ever it was is obviously burnt off now:conf:

lol - hmm it does sound like its "burning off" like you said as the smell is progressively getting less & less - does anyone know if a clutch which is on it way out would have that smell ? someone at work said it could be this

no I checked all the hoses to see if they had melted but nothing,I also replaced all the heat shielding on the hoses.

If the belt is slipping would that cause a problem with a rubber smell ? also this would surely have an effect on the performance ?

In my experience, burning clutches smell like really heavily boiled sprouts.

Dont eat sprouts so would never know !

If this was one of the belts would the smell not be coming from the engine bay more and not underneath the car ?

Also if it was a belt why would the smell be reduced in time ?

sounds like you have run over a plasic bag and it has melted to the exhaust system. I had the same thing a while ago. It just ended up burning the smell off.
