If anyone's seen Bowling for Columbine, Michael Moore talks about how there are loads of guns in both USA and Canada, but people fear gun crime in USA much more. There is more gun crime in USA, because (according to the film) people feel more scared due to what they see and hear around them and in the news. People read about others getting attacked, feel more scared, and some will even carry knives to defend themselves. Inevitably, a small minority of those knife-carriers will actually use them, whether it's a drunken brawl or whatever. The process seems to feed itself.
