Hi,

I just bought a second hand Canon 300D SLR and playing around with all the function. Anyone out there have the same model?

what is it about the firmware upgrade to unlock more function? not that I know how to use the basic anyway :D

here is a photo taken in my garden just now

In my opinion, you can do so much by exploring the camera's basic functions that it's worth figuring that out first. I bought the Canon 20D a little while back - my first digital SLR. I'm starting to get to grips with basics.

For example, playing around with depth of field is rewarding. Put it onto Av (aperture priority) and set it to, say, 5.6 or less. This reduces the depth of field so you can isolate the subject (see attached). IF you want a big depth of field with lots in focus, try larger F numbers (narrower aperture).

Apologies if you know this already.

Also, have you discovered Tv on your 300, which allows you to select the shutter speed? Then you can fiddle around taking pics with very slow shutter speeds. E.g. the pic attached was taken, I think, at about 0.3 seconds or so. It's horribly overexposed, but it's enough to see the idea. Apologies to the good photographers on here.

Plus, I'm not sure about the 300D, but my 20D has a special button on the top to make your subject resemble a fat bastard with a huge arse. It works really well.

Damn it wish my Nikon D70 worked like that!!! I've been photographing for about 2 years now, another one of my little expensive hobbies :p

I've got my own website now and manging to sell a few piccies now and again. I'm hoping to come down to a meet with it and take lots of pics and hopefully get them posted up here... I've got a couple of telephoto lenses and a wide angle lens too so I can get some pretty interesting action shots...

Take a look at http://adamcurrie.co.uk if you're interested... sorry for the shamless plug, ahem....

thanks for the tips, I have only used the green square (full auto) and M

did play around with iso and shutter speed to avoid using the flash......no idea how to use flash properly, always over exposed or if there is such thing.

I have been away for a couple of weeks Ben-San, got married :)

Charlotte, depends on what model of SLR, the cheapest I have seen is around 499 with everything you need to start but there are so many lense, battery pack, flash etc etc to dry out your wallet. I don't think my skill deserve a new SLR so I opt for second hand.

Worse come to worse I will lose interest and sell it off third hand ..

Fantastic. That's what I aspire to. Love that shot of Lochan Na h'Achlaise (no. 11) - did you have a filter on for that? I was in that area last Summer and hope to go back this year equipped witha decent camera (though not much knowledge yet)

Yeah, I use a wide range of filters including a Hoya ProV Circular Polarising, hoya ND grad 120, 121, 121M etc and an R72 infrared filter, but that hasn't been out the box yet....

I'm lacking the time (and charisma) at the mo to get some new shots, if anyone can think of a topic I'll get the shots!!

The UV one Benson as i understand is very good as it will help protect your lens from dirt etc.....

I got one off Ebay and a Polarised one too which can be turned round to adjust the light and cut down on reflextions.

I put up a thread a month back about filters that may be of some use.
