MarkTheBoy
Evening all, Have just bought myself a shiny black 94' GZ TT. It has been looked after well as far as I can tell but since picking it up yesterday (in the pouring rain - fun) i've had a couple of warning lights light up randomly. Ive had the active spoiler miss-behave a couple of times, the warning triangle comes on and the active spoiler green light flashes (common problem I assume by all of the threads ive read) then once parked it has occasionally comes down then back up a couple of times. The other warning light ive had is on the small panel to the right of the steering wheel, its on the left hand end and looks like an engine block and comes with the big warning triangle. Both of these warnings have happened when Ive accelerated hard up to about 70 ish (ahem) mph but then go away a few seconds after I slow down to about 40 ish. They haven't happened at the same time either. After going through the threads left by other people about certain faults I thought i'd give it a go and tried Mawby's fault code ecu bypass method (thanks so much btw mawby and aerotop dave, without some of your threads I wouldn't have had a clue what to look for in a Supra). However instead of the big triangle warning light flashing the code, the engine shaped warning light did the talking. It flashed up error 42 (flashed 4 times, paused, flashed twice then repeated). The 'overdrive off' light also flashes on/off repeatedly whilst bridging the terminals. I was thinking maybe oil pressure or something as its under hard acceleration but hoped you guys could help me out. Btw its still restricted and still has the cats, pretty much stock apart from the wheels. Sorry for the long post but Im scared of driving my baby till I know whats wrong with her. Thanks alot. Spyda
Hey, and welcome to the club! I'm pretty sure, (from memory), that 42 is a number 1 speed sensor fault. Which would make sense that you're getting active spoiler troubles and a warning light on at 70mph (when the active spoiler would usualy come down) and then it goes away again at 40mph, (what the spoiler goes back up). Do you know what speed converter is has on it? It's worth while getting it checked over and possibly replaced. Hope I've been of some use, Adam. Dave
Just how many supra owners have not had the dreaded error 42 my lights go off at 100 leptons then come back on again so 2morrow im gonna bypass the odo prob gone [i hope] oh yeah and welcome to the best club on the planet
MarkTheBoy
Afternoon guys and gals, Quote - """Do you know what speed converter is has on it? It's worth while getting it checked over and possibly replaced.""" Speed Converter? Tell me more, where do I look to find out? Im not too worried about the active spoiler problem as I can just switch it off for the time being which has stopped that warning light but still a little concerned about the little engine block shaped light on the RH panel. It came up again today under heavy acceleration... I've repeatedly checked the oil level and its always dead centre of the mark on the dipstick. Is there anything else I can do to try and work out the problem or should I just ship it off to Toyota? I live in Chelmsford in Essex is there anywhere better to take it than a Toyota dealer as i've heard they can be a bit funny about the import soops. Another long post... soz :-) PS- Thanks for the warm welcome all, Loving the club!
MKIVDreamer
I don't think you'll find anyone on here recommending Mr T for a soop. Parts, no problem, but just don't let them touch your P&J!!! Most places will claim "I'm afraid we're not setup to deal with non-UK models" anyway. Oh and BTW
Homer
Hi and welcome If you get the active spoiler warning at 70mph and 40mph its reporting a fault when trying to deploy. It could be the spoiler getting stuck on the plastic lip on the front bumper. Its very common, the plastic lip gets bent over time, especially after its been hit on curbs a few times! The easiest way to check is to have someone sit in the car with the engine off (ignition on II) and have the press the 'Down' button while you look under the front to see if it catches (Careful you don’t get hit by the spoiler, I can tell you from experience that it hurts ). If it catches then you can do what most do and dremmel off a few mm off the inside of the plastic lip. If its not catching then as suggested, a bad speedo converter could be at fault. These are normally wired in behind the instrument cluster (you'll need to remove the dash panels to get to it, but its much easier than it sounds). If its not a THOR unit you may want to replace it anyway as most units do not adjust for the speed sensitive power steering (which will results in extremely light steering). Not sure about the engine light, though a common cause of intermittent warning lights is low brake fluid. The warning system seems very sensitive to low fluid, so top up to the full mark. Hope this helps
Scooter
Speed Converter? Tell me more, where do I look to find out? Basically all imports have some form of convertor to change the speedo to MPH and often to delimit the car from 112mph. There are a few different types and afaik all can play up. I think they are usually soldered into a curcuit behind the dash? or near the ECU in the passenger footwell. As they effect the speed signal it can mess up some of the other speed sensitive equipment ie power steering, spoiler and cruise. yeh - what Homer said! MarkTheBoy
I see what you mean now, ive had a look at the spoiler and it deploys cleanly every time its just that it sometimes does the old sticking its tongue out thing when ticking over. Made me laugh my arse off when it did it the first few times but I reckon if it did it when sitting at the traffic lights i'd end up looking like a proper weapon Anyway, I'll try topping up the brake fluid to the maximum and see what that does. Fingers crossed. The other thing is I still get the stiffer steering at speed etc and everthing feels perfectly normal so im not sure that its that. Cheers guys, any more suggestions please keep em coming. Mark
imi
There was a post a while ago about a pink wire behind the odometer that could be at fault, apparently one needs to close the loop or something on that wire in order for this problem to go away. I get the exact same problem on mine, despite my active spoiler being in manual mode
MarkTheBoy
Cheers everyone, I'll see about getting the speed converter replaced and have the car de-limited at the same time. Strange though, its been really hot today and i've been out smashing it about all day and not had the warning lights once???? Maybe it doesn't like the cold wealther or something. Still gonna do it for peace of mind though. Thanks again PS- I love this site, you're all legends!!!
