Sqeaking/rubbing noise when engine is warm

Hi all.

anyone got any ideas on what this could be...

I have recently had the head gasket replaced on my J-Spec Supra TT6. When I picked it up there where some problems with it that the garage say they are struggling to be able to sort out.

1) There is a loud squeaking/rubbing/whining noise from the front of the engine. It only happens after a 5 minute run. I agreed to take the car home just in case the problem sorted itself out, i.e. a belt bedding in or something but the problem got worse. The car went back to the garage to sort out a few other snags and the guy told me the noise was sorted. I picked it up and the noise was gone. The engine was at operating temp so I though all was good. I drove it home and the problem was back. This time the noise got louder when I depressed the clutch. The car is going to go back to the garage but I wonder if they have the savvy to sort it. The noise was definitely not there when it when in for the gasket.

Any Ideas?

2) the idle has dropped to around 4-500 rpm and it stalled at a junction for the 1st time ever. can there be any link to the above.

Any help would be appreciated...

how did they remove the crank pulley (assuming this came off to remove the cam belt). this noise is often associated with the crank pulley failing. Its a combination of plastic and metal and it can fail especially if heat has been applied to remove the crank nut.

Thanks mate, I will check this out with them when the car goes back. Would this make the problem only happen when its warm, do ya think, and would the cluth affect the noise? This would be good news if it was the problem

i'm no expert, but it may be that its not very badly gone, and that only when warm (plastic more flexible?) does it happen?

not sure about the clutch aspect, they shouldn't have needed to touch anything to do with this if just doing the head, should they?

I only mentioned the crank pulley as it is one of the few things that crops up, especially with the screeching/whining noise........

When you use the clutch it's probably just the change in engine speed and not the clutch itself responsible for the noise .

Like Scooter said, it could be the crank pulley.

Might be worth doing a search on the subject.

The garage may well have used a little heat to remove the pulley.

Mine did exactly this after I had a service in November last year. I thought it was a belt slipping because the weather had changed and it only happened after the engine had warmed up. The noise also changes depending on engine load.

Then I took the car out for a spin with a mate and gave it some noodle when suddenly there a loud bang.

Turned out the pulley had detached from the crank.

£400 repair bill to sort that out.

I'm afraid that there's no easy way to fix this.

My advice would be to get the cambelt changed at the same time, as to replace the crank shaft pulley you've done 90% of the work needed to change the cambelt. (My garage removed the radiator to do this work as well)

Cheers guys, Its going back in on weds. I'm not gonna pay for it to be sorted, thats up to the garage. It didn't make the noise before it went in to them the first time so it shouldn't when it comes out, by rights. I had the cambelt changed when the head gasket was done. I was hoping the change of pitch of the sqeak when i depress the clutch (car stationary) was just the change of the load on the belt... it gets louder and faster when the clutch is out though, i would have thought it would be the other way round, oh well, I 'll see what happens on weds. Thanks again. If anyone has anymore ideas let me know...

I didn't do anything... the engine did it all, lol. The coolant started to overflow after a run and you could hear gurgling from behind the dash. Then I started having problems starting the car, then it would idle really lumpy. Soon after shed loads of steam started to pour out of the exhaust. We could see no real reason why the head gasket had gone but I replaced it and had the head skimmed a fair bit. Its fine now and the car sits at a lower temperature so all seems good.

The rubbing noise turned out to be a worn tensioner on the main belt. Simple as that. Now my clutch is knackered. If it wasn't for bad luck I would have no luck at all! I think its time to go back to scoobies and evos for me guys. I have had a sackful!!!
