Daston
Hi guys currently fitting new pads to the soop, I have managed to get the old ones out and the new ones back in however the 2 pistons have gone in to their full extent and I can't push them back out enough to close the caliper any ideas? This is the first major (not quite so in some of your eyes) bit of work I have ever done on a car.
merckx
You must've tried putting your foot on the brake!
Scooter
how did you push the pistons back? did you open the fluid reservior cap in the engine bay?
Daston
oops got very irish there. I ment that the pistons have come out and I cant push them back in enough to clear the pads and close the caliper. Is there a nack to it or is it a case of leavering them with a bit of wood? merckx
case of leavering them with a bit of wood? Yes. Take the cap off the brake fluid reservoir before you do this, the level will go up as you push the pistons in. Watch for it overflowing and check the level when you're finished. Make sure you don't disturb the dust covers on the pistons when you lever them in.

Daston
Help!!!!!!!! Fitted my LF pads no problem managed to move the pistons using a bit of wood, started to work on the RF brakes and moved the pistons in but the bottom sliding pin wont slide in so I cant drop the caliper housing down. Any tips on how to free it? i have Taken the rubber gromet off and gave it a soaking in WD40 but it didnt do much
Mike M
Ahh ,they are usually the culprit for sticking brakes and should normally move smoothly. Should be able to turn it with a spanner though and keep spraying it and wiggling it. It'll probably come out covered in rusty grease and will need cleaned up and regreased. zap
You need a penetrating oil such as plus-gas or similar to get into the sleeve, there is a flat on the sliding pin try to get the penetrant down there, leave it for a while then try to gently turn it with a spanner but only small movements as you will score the bore if you do it violently. Daston
Ok just tried to take off the sliding pin to regrease the parts in there but the bastard wont budge I can loosen it about 2mm then its solid I am unable to get anything large in there as a leaver because of the bodywork. Any tips?
Mike M
Damn, my one on the MR2 was solid but gave up eventually after lots of WD-40 and turning it bit by bit plus pushing and pulling at it.
Daston
Right after my weetabix I can now turn the sliding pin round and round (does it come out??) I have taken the caliper housing off now in the attempt to take off the torque plate but that wont budge either, any ideas cause I'm stumped! Scooter
get some mole grips and clamp them on the sliding pin. Rotate the pin as you have been but only say 30 degrees around and try and apply inward and outward force at the same time ie try and get it to rotate and go in and out a bit. A tap with a hammer can help with the 'in' part. Also heat applied to the caliper body where the slider goes in (careful of the rubber boot) can help if the brute force approach still doesn't work. Mike M
Cool, glad you got it sorted. You should notice a bit of a difference now, Could have been like that for a wee while since it was that tight. Mike
