Digsy Posted April 8, 2002 Share Posted April 8, 2002 I am going to replace all my pads soon on account of their lack of thickness. Looking at the how-to pages on MKIV.com, it shows the pads being installed from rear without taking the calipers off the upright. However, the caliper design is plainly different so I'm assuming that this is the UK / US spec (or "proper") brake design. Looking at my J-spec calipers I'm pretty certain you have to take the caliper off the upright and install the new pads from the "front". Is this correct, and does anyone know the correct torque setting for the J-spec caliper bolts, and do they need replacing too? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest Martin F Posted April 8, 2002 Share Posted April 8, 2002 I'm not sure about Jap spec MKIV, but on the MKIII you have to undo one bolt at the bottom and the pad carrier (new term maybe ?) will flip up and you can then remove and replace the pads. I was quite suprised when i saw CW replace Stu's pads (UK Spec) at Bentwaters by just pulling them out!! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Just trying to finalise which bolt we are talking about: 1) If the one you have to remove is one of the caliper to upright bolts I would expect that you also have to loosen the top one? Correct or not? 2) The correct torque for this bolt is 118Nm (from MKIV.com) which is slightly tighter than a wheel nut (103Nm). Did it "feel" about the same when you undid it? 3) Or maybe its one of the sliding pins you remove, in which case the torques would probaly be lower. Did it "feel" about the same when you undid it? Wohhhh - I think you'll find that is the torque for the bolt that holds the caliper onto the hub bracket. Guest Mycroft Posted April 8, 2002 Share Posted April 8, 2002 Darren, your are looking at the Torque plate, this attaches to the Trunnion and holds the entire unit to the suspension system, you need to 'attack' the 10 or 12mm sliding pin bolts, they are just undone with a simple 180mm long spanner! You just remove the wire springy-clips which hold the 2 steel pins in place, then pull the pins out, lever the pistons back into the caliper, and then just pull the brake pads out. Admittedly CW was a bit quicker than me ..... first time i did it (pre-Trax 2001 - all 4 pads) i was using brake cleaner, and copper greasing the pins etc.etc. took me ages !!
