This is my current favorite...take a deep breath guys........

....

That is marvellous Ewen. Only two punctuation marks in that extremely well written prose. One fullstop (period for Americans) followed by a sentence beginning with 'But'. The second full stop followed by 'and' - note the lack of a capital letter.

Two of the first rules of English grammar, broken. Personally I also found it easy to read the first 8-line sentence without my face turning purple, or then again maybe I didn't.

See, there, in a nutshell, is the problem with ungrammatical monkey-talk. I honestly had real problems getting at the meaning of the second sentence, because it is so poorly constructed.

In the end, I hit myself on the head with a spanner a couple of times and, as my thinking bacame muddied and shallow, it all started to make sense.

O well if it gives the older generation something to talk about and be even more sad then what there lives already are by pointing out pointless grammar and spelling, well so be it. :D

After reading that latest missive, I think you should quit now before you get really slated :)

I'm not too proud of this, but Kyle had a problem with the original thread title.....'Pedants will be outraged'. Larger and more established words are disappearing fast from todays curriculum, granted, but for him to assume 'pedant' was the harbinger of a dodgy under-age related post was a little depressing.

CJ am not that stupid lol its all deliberate, its just some folks take the bait ;)

I just do not see the point of "dot the I's and cross the T's" on a forum, I think its quite pathetic pointing it out. It does not make you a better person for pointing it out.

The fact that this thread has really only been replied by some (and i say some lightly) of the usual people that point out spelling mistakes etc, is pointing out that people are really not that bothered about it. Just an observation.

There should have been a full stop after forum and not a comma. :D

If you mainly communicate in text-speak, and/or tend to use "u" to signify "you", read no further. This won't interest you.

For fogeys and pedants only, then: I had an e-mail from Norwich Union today. The subject line was (drum roll, please):

"We need are heads examining"

I wouldn't mind if it was some tupenny-ha'penny small business, but a huge company like Norwich Union? Jeez. It's the end, I tell you.

I work at NU....I'm not surprised... :(

You're right James, it doesn't make CJ a better person for pointing it out, but it might make the person with the poor grammar appreciate the errors, and therefore not make them in future. How many times have we seen "funny" posts with photos of road markings ...

These mistakes are costly and can easily be prevented. I personally don't find them funny anymore I find them depressing. As a nation we are becoming more and more lazy with regard to our language. Do you not find it a little embarrassing that our neighbours, who use English as a second language, are better at our grammar than we are as natives? I know I do.

btw I know that this thread was relating to grammar, and the above pictures are spelling mistakes :p

:yeahthat: There are a few foreigners at work and they all speak and write perfect English. It's depressing that they have to give grammar lessons to the natives!

Picking up on the points raised by Mike, imagine the reaction of a prospective employer to the same grammatical errors being written in a CV. Given the choice of a well written CV or one displaying the kind of content sometimes seen on the forum, I know which I would choose.

Hey, JamesMark, what if my technical posts were full of mistakes and errors and looked like a retard had written them? Is that acceptable? Your rules, as long as it's kinda sorta almost correct and I nearly put the effort in it doesn't matter, right?

I find if people can't be arsed to type their questions in correctly, I certainly can't be arsed to help them, and the worst offenders of txt spk get booted into Supra Chat without me even bothering to try and decipher the actual question.

I remember a member posting a very long sentence with no punctuation whatsoever. I jokingly posted up that he should have joined in with my group buy on full stops. 5 minutes later he PM'd me to ask if they were a form of brakes.

That is true - I kid you not! :D
