Recommendations for New LCD or Plasma TV?

My old TV has just lost the green colour gun, looks distinctly odd, anyway its time to replace it as its 12 years old, it was one of the top range Sony 32" with 100HZ and could run external speakers,

i want something in the range of 36" to 42" not to bothered if its LCD or Plasma but i'm leaning towards plasma with there quicker response time, and also like the picture on the Phillips sets although people say that Panasonic and samsung are best, trouble is the more i look the more confused i get:confused: recommendations and links please:)

I personally have experience of a SAMSUNG LCD and they are A1...

The Phillips are excellent too, although pricey - the analog feeds look slightly better with the phillips.

Sony have the new brevia range, not sure what they are like.

I will have to take a look at Samsung, budget is about £1400 the Phillips 37" and 42" and i think the 37" panasonic fall into that price range, and i think one of the Sonys do also, there seems to be a bit of a mixed opinion on the Sony sets ?

Have a look at Phillips, the ones with pixel plus 2 are very very, very good..indeed but pricey. I couldnt justify that premium so ended up with the Samsung R41 32", this was so good, I ended up buying another one for my folks...

I'm just about to buy too. Done quite a lot of reading up and have finally decided on the Toshiba 37WLT66.

There is a 42WLT66 too, and that is quite exciting as it actually accepts 1080p input - the first affordable REAL HD. From what I can make out, however, there is still some debate as to whether the internals genuinely render in 1080p, though.

Another interesting point, however:

I have heard that the industry is expecting something like 20% of homes in the country to have bought a new TV in the first half of this year (mainly because of the world cup), and therefore there is some speculation that prices are artificially high at the moment due to demand and a big price drop could occur later in the year.

That said, I'm not necessarily convinced about this myself, and it's not stopping me planning to buy in June.

If you REALLY want more info than you can handle, I have found http://www.avforums.com to be a fantastic source of information.

Hi mate,

A friend of mine has just purchased a LG 42" Plasma TV from Currys.

Included 5.1 surround system and stand for £2k.

From what he keeps telling me is to look at contrast ratio eg: 5000:1. The higher the better and also that anything above 32" then go for Plasma rather than LCD.

Also make sure it is HD ready with a HDMI input and not just HD compatible. Will have a sticker on it anyway.

Edit - Also heard that LG make the components for LCD TVs for other manufacturers. Don't know how true that is.

Why would you choose plasma over LCD then? Apart from the fact plasma's are cheaper. I'd always though LCD's were supposed to be better?

Not sure exactly but my mate has done a load of research and opted for a plasma because he says that the response times are much better above 32" for plasma. If he'd got a 32" or smaller he would have got LCD.

Going from the research i have done, plasma response times are far quicker than LCD, and the larger they go the worse it gets, plasma lifetime is now about the same as LCD so that is not an issue, also plasma has better contrast/brightness on the bigger screens, and yes i have heard that LG (who are now the biggest producers of all types of screens) make most of them, the main trouble is seeing a decent picture comparison in the shops! they all seem to have either bad digital signals, or a fantastic HD demo, which are the two extremes!

Completely agree with that.

Personally, I prefer LCD, Digital on LCD and HD on LCD IMO seemd much better to me on a LCD.

early plasma was not too good, new generation stuff is a lot better as they have improved the life a lot, but is still no good if you have a lot of static images (use it like a monitor for example) because you can still get pixel burn.

Plasma generally has more vibrant colours, better contrast, more responsiveness and probably makes a better TV for moving pictures only.

LCD has better life (has no degredation over time), has lower contrast ratio, typically better resolutions are available, has generally more natural but subtle colours, is more suited to computer monitor applications but can do TV very well too.

My projector is LCD, have lived with it for over a year and a half as an every day TV, massive picture, amazing for films, I'd never go back.

I have a Panasonic 42" Plasma and its awsome, I went for the non HD unit and the picture is still amazing :)

I see no need for HD at the moment.

I have that too. I considered the extra cost of a HD unit to be OTT at the moment but wil rpobably buy one when the cost comes down to a more realistic level and the HD signal becomes the norm.

I bought an LG (LP1) LCD and it's excellent.

No problem with the refresh rate or the colours or the contrast. top notch.

Even the sound is Ok for built in speakers.

my brother has a Sony Bravia and it's not as good as my LG

If you want build quality, picture quality etc then buy Panasonic but dont buy the retail version always buy the business unit as there built better to last longer ;) ive had my 42" for 2 years now and never had any issues or problems. Father in law has the phillips and its not as good, dont be tempted by the samsung/LG etc yes there cheaper but trust me its worth a few hundred quid extra.

At the moment over 32" then it can only be plasma!! i'm sure this will change as LCD moves on but its a few years away yet.

I'm going to change mine later this year for either the 50" or 60" panasonic :D

If i was going to buy a 42" i would get this one

http://www.av-sales.com/PANASONIC-TH42PX60-33-16.htm

Its where i bought mine from and the service was superb, delivered next day and they even take it out the box and check it all out etc

I've had my Toshiba 42" plasma for over 3 years now and it has been great. The screen was made by Matsushita and is used by panasonic and i think samsung. Best plasmas today I reckon are made by Panasonic, Pioneer and Fujitsu.

Not sure about LCD, i bought a 32" LG a few months back and i still reckon my older plasma has the better more natural picture.

Well sounds like you could be on about SED technology, which should be available towards the end of the year. It's not likely to be any cheaper than LCD though (not yet at least), and I should imagine will initially be more expensive.

I also think that you'll find it takes a little longer for SED to fit into a regular-sized TV set - I've heard that at the moment they can still only get a 720p image onto a 55" screen for a reasonable production cost.
