veilsideTT
Hi, I'm selling the Miss's Audi TT on eBay and a potential buyer has asked me a few questions regarding the car. They have also asked for the VIN number so they can run a HPI check on the car. Should i be wary of giving out the VIN number to ebayers? I know there are lots of scams etc on eBay but not sure of any VIN number scams or things i should know? Scott
scooby_doo_do
I'd be a little bit weary.. But then again - if he's that interested then he could come and have a look and check it off with his documentation.. He shouldn't need the vin details for the HPI - just the details to check against to see if they are right. Just tell him its not dodgy and if he wants to come over and take a look thats fine - and then say your a bit weary of giveing out the vin details over the net due to cloning bla bla bla. hope that helps :-)
veilsideTT
Suppose if he runs a HPI on the number plate then he will have the VIN number when he gets the HPI report anyway. oh, i dont know, dont want to put the person off by making them think i have somthing to hide, as i dont. You just cant be too carfull in this day!

I didnt think they gave out the VIN number with the HPI, all they do is confirm with a YES / NO reply as to whether the number that you have corresponds to their records. Personally, I wouldnt give out the VIN number on the internet.

Scooter
2 minutes on the net got me this (see below) which is just like the info available on the new zealand supra site info...........imo the VIN/internet issue falls into the catagory of Number plates, mobile numbers on the net ie people get all wound up over nothing. Very straight forward system. The 'average' chassis number looks like: WAUZZZ8DZTA123456 Breaking that down, you can lose the 'WAUZZZ' that part of the chassis number is never really used. That now leaves: 8DZTA123456. Drop the 'Z', that isn't used either, so we're now left with the 'real' chassis number: 8DTA123456. 8D is the vehicle, in this case an A4 T is the year, in this case 1996. (A was 1980, B 1981, C 1982 and so on to the year 2001, when the letter was changed to numbers to denote the model year, 1 = 2001, 2 = 2002). A is the factory where the car was built. A is Ingolstadt in Germany. 123456 is the actual chassis number and can be traced back to the very day the car was built.
veilsideTT
Strange that i just recieved this from ebay regarding the user that asked the question: Our records indicate that you recently sent an email to or received an email from XXXXXXX through the eBay email system (for example, you may have sent an email to this member through Ask Seller a Question or received an email from this member through Contact eBay Member). "Sometimes eBay accounts are used to send email solicitations for transactions outside of eBay, or to send unrelated questions in hopes that you will respond so that the other party can obtain your email address. We wanted you to be aware of the potential fraud risk these solicitations pose and encourage you to be cautious about the email you received from this member. Please keep in mind, sales that take place outside of eBay are not eligible for any eBay or PayPal protective services and you run the risk of losing your money or your item if you complete these transactions. We would encourage you to review the eBay pages related to Fraud Protection at the address provided below for information on steps you can take to ensure that your transactions are successful" Seems weird that i got this after he asked me for VIN number.
