In all honesty I wouldn't. THe market seems to be saturated at the mo. All jobs are badly paid unless you are a super programming guru.SO if you're going to do it then specialise in something insanely difficult then people will PAY properly.

yeh thats very true. i feel i'm underpaid because i just have a knowledge in lots of things and dont specialise in anything specific. i have also been with the company for 7 years so its time for a change!

You only need to be proficient at programming to earn a decent salary, you don't need to be a guru. Programming usually involves some domain knowledge too, it is often the combination of these two aspects that makes you good, not one or the other in isolation.

If you couple programming with skills that can not be outsourced (like security) then you job is all the more secure.

More senior architectural and design skills are excellent because they are language and technology independant :) but you won't gain these over night unfortunately, these things do take years to get good at!

you need to start somewhere, if you can get it, programming in a well used language like Java / C / C++ /C# will always find you work. From there you can work up to the more senior levels.

However proper programming is the harder of the two routes in for some people. Anyone has the ability to do IT admin, support, networking etc, but I've noticed not everyone can take to programming, some people are at it for years and still don't properly get it. Sounds obvious but it is worth knowing your strenghts and weaknesses and capitalising on your strengths to get the best result for minimum effort...
