michael
One thing to do is look at the job ads and see the skills they are looking for - then try and learn the basics at home with some cheap books / Internet and use this info to blag an interview, once you have a foot in the door amaze them with your personality.... so about that job in the butchers..... A few jobs to get you started: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10151&productId=177693&categoryId=33931# http://www.jobserve.com/searchresults.aspx?jobType=*&d=7&page=1&q=1st+line+and+leeds&x=0&y=0&order=Rank&all=on&cb01=1&dt=1&ps=20&cid=

Thorin
ditto what Michael said. Unfortunately most first line support jobs are crap pay. An OU course or BTEC in something would be beneficial I would have thought.
chilli
what are your current skills? how much do you need/want to earn? a = 20-25k, b = 25-30K, c = 30-35k, d = 35-40k, e = 40-50k, f = 50k+ do you have any IT skills at present?

michael
Michael, I don't want a job as a socket set! I'm not shiny enough either. LOL, sorry about that That could have been a dodgy mistake if I wasn't so pure This was the link I meant to post: http://www.jobserve.com/searchresults.aspx?jobType=*&d=7&page=1&q=helpdesk+and+leeds&x=0&y=0&order=Rank&all=on&cb01=1&dt=1&ps=20&cid=0 Similar to the other, just searching on 'helpdesk' rather than '1st line' - ideally you want to try and get in somewhere that isn't a basic call centre and lets it's people have a tinker with things. RedM
20-25k as the lowest option? I really do live simply. I'm only on 14,750 at the moment and I'd be happy making 16k and really happy on 17k.
GeordieSteve
Ok then maybe IT is for you. 17k+ seems to be the going rate for 1st line in your area. I say go for it!
chilli
ahhh should be easy to blag a job for that much money I'd reckon check the market, swat up on skills that are in demand, be confident and just go for it from there the only way is up... it may be harder to earn 30+ these days in IT, but at least you have some headroom to grow into
RedM
I wouldn't know what to do with 30k a year. Apart from the Ridox bodykit, the single conversion, the respray, the Volks wheels, the big ass plasma telly, the hoildays, the security etc etc. Apart from all that I wouldn't know what to do with it. chilli
lol but it doesn't go far, you have a small mortguage I take it (lucky sod!)
RedM
We rent. Oh, I get it. I could start earning big money and spend it all on a mortgage thereby making me work harder and spend my time worrying that I'll lose my income.
chilli
lol nah if you're happy then stick with it mate you don't "have" to do anything, less pressure that way

chilli
what I would say is, given your current situation, you are in the ideal position to get on the career ladder and start working up at your own pace. In a year or two you could be doing quite well...

chilli
100k interest only for 400 a month! cheap maybe I need to renew my mortguage then, but I do pay into an ISA, that's where the rest goes...
RedM
We pay 450 a month but we live in a really nice, safe area. We tried for a mortgage but the amounts they were offering would have barely got us a place in areas I wouldn't park a Supra. So we rent here amongst the Bentleys and Astons. Mate from what your saying wage wise, sounds like you have a perfect opportunity for IT helpdesk work. Money will be least what your on and is good chance to settle in and decide where you want to branch off too. Good luck!
