Just in from the hospital - we had a league match tonight and one of our players has unfortunately died. Turns out he was been screened for heart problems as there was a history of HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy). Sounds like he had it as he suddenly dropped down and had a fit due to a cut in blood supply to his brain. There was no hope after that, all CPR etc failed and the paramedics could do nothing. Ended up having to help them, won't forget the sight of his blood shot eyes being unreactive for a long time, informed his girlfriend and mum to see if there was anything the paramedics should know, can't imagine what they're going through now. He was only 29 and leaved 2 8 year old kids :(

Im a physio for a small local rugby team and one away match, the opossition prop went off feeling absolutely shattered. He'd only just recovered from a chest infection and decided to play. he was about 35. Anyway, few minutes to go in the match, he starts walking off to the changing rooms to get changed and just collapses on the way. Was still breathing but very laboured. Phoned the ambulance straight away and did what we (as first aiders could), stopped breathing and pulse dropped shortly afterwards. I was involved in the CPR until the ambulance arrived. Found out later that they were unable to revive him. Still haunts me to this day and will forever more, its a scary thing to have to witness, feel for you.
