RedM Posted May 22, 2006 Share Posted May 22, 2006 Branner's thread about Sydney got me wondering if I'm the only one to think that moving to Australia or New Zealand would be a good move. I've been pondering it a lot for many months. Mostly becuase I watch too many re-runs of A Place in the Sun and they did several from Aus/NZ. You seem to get a lot of house for your money, weather looks pretty tolerable, plenty of space, lack of people. Being located so far from anywhere is a downer though. Anyone thought about it? Like everywhere it has its pitfalls but overall I would say it has far more to offer than the UK. Nick Posted May 22, 2006 Share Posted May 22, 2006 I've done a bit of travelling around both OZ and NZ and all I can say is don't think about it, do it ! On the whole the standard of living there is so much better. A few friends of mine have made the move and some really struggled to start with, but it was worth it in the end and they'd never go back. Me and the missus are thinking of going back for our honeymoon. We are lucky in our jobs in the fact that we could probably get a job fairly easily, the only problem is my missus, she is such a home bird and dont think id get her away from her mum and dad. When we bought a house it had to be in the same town as them, so doubt ill get her to buy one on the other side of the world any time soon!!! Im working on it though. For the sake of a bit of sunshine we decided it wasn't worth leaving our families. It's also worth thinking about the amount of Aussies over here- if Oz is that great, why are they here? The missus and i have said we will sell both of our houses and move out there in the next 3 years. Im not gonna bring kids up in this country cos they will end up speaking kosovon or some shit pikey language. And also they get jap motors cheap and the petrol is cheap to. Again - Just heard this from some people who have been there. If I could chose anywhere to live other than Hawaii/Alaska/Okinawa though, I think NZ would be way up on the list. So I went to the expo's - got loads of info and was/am seriously looking into NZ for later in the year. Can get a job no probs. NZ is easier to get into than Oz also. Or apply for residency if you qualify. As said above following doing lots of research, NZ is easier to get into than OZ, and indeed NZ Immigration have had to toughen up their policies as people were using NZ as a stopover to get into OZ (as once you lived in NZ for 3 years you can automatically get into OZ). I know five ex-workmates who went to Oz in the last couple of years- only one you could say has had a succesful move. The others have either come back, or their wives left them and came back (with the kids) leaving hubby out there. Sydney is more in your face and hectic, nowhere near as bad as London but its still there. Some of the small bays outside Sydney are lovely though. I think the weather here could be a killer though, Saturday morning I woke up and it was cloudy but warm, it then rained and the humidty went nuts. Bear in mind its almost winter here and it gets to 40 degrees in the summer. I preferred Melbourne, that has similar amounts of sun, but has a cool offshore breeze to cool things down. Its more relaxed and not quite as crammed in. And yes, the UK does look like a shit pit compared to Australia. I keep reading the UK news on yahoo and its just the same old bollox making no sense at all. All that said, given the choice I would move to Canada, Victoria or Vancouver. I'm sure that alot of the novelty of a new country would wear off over time, but that would still be many times better than here in england. I have been chatting to an australian freind of mine who has contacts in immigration. (he sub-contracts australian and south african labour over here) so am gonna get as much info as i can on it first, Because I know what will happen, I'll decide to go for it and get my hopes up, and end up not being able to go! The weather in mid summer can get pretty damn hot, while i was in Sydney, the hottest it go was around 35 degrees, which was bearable as it was not humid. Brisbane was the most humid place I went to, it was around 38 degrees and if you stood still for more than a minute you were sweating buckets! didn't much like it there anyway.
