Jake
I've just fired up my newly rebuilt VVTi engine. It struggles to start and when it does run it's quite lumpy. I've convinced myself that the inlet cam timing is wrong. The VVTi system means that the cam gear can move backwards and forwards through about 5 tooth positions without moving the camshaft at all. I spoke to Mark at Phoenix about this while I was putting the engine together and he told me to wind the cam past its timing mark by that amount of free play and then to rotate the cam gear back (anticlockwise) as far as it would go using the free-play, so that the cam gear is at the anticlockwise end of its travel. So I did that, but like I said it runs really lumpy. Does anyone know where I could double check this info about VVTi cam timing? What other cars use the VVTi version of the 2JZ-GTE? Was it only on JDM cars like the Aristo? Thanks for any help.

Guest Terry S
yes, both cams, gets line to match up with divets on the timing plate. Basically get hold of the intake cam and wind it full clockwise until it lines up with the divet.. P.S. Manually rotate the engine on the crankshaft bolt to TDC. Do all the lines on the cam gear match up?

Jake
Manually rotate the engine on the crankshaft bolt to TDC. Do all the lines on the cam gear match up? How do you mean match up? When the yellow line on the crank pulley is at the Zero mark on the lower timing belt cover the line marks on the cam gears (not the dot marks) line up with the marks on the backplate. That's right isn't it?

Jake
Thanks Terry and Mig! All working great now! Carl, Yes mate I've got a double garage with all the gear. Engine hoist, engine stand, compressor, welder, Pillar drill, etc etc
Jake
Oh yeah, One other thing. The red triange MIL and the yellow "Check Engine" warnings are lit. I reset the ECU but they came back as soon as I started the engine. We don't have a DIY way to read stored error codes on the VVTi models, do we? Not sure what to do about that.
