Suprasteve
4th at 30 mph ?!?!? i go 1st, 2nd, 3rd...6th. only changing down to 4th if going up hill. It sits nicely just over 1,000 rpm in 6th and feels more comfortable. Would i be getting better fuel consumption if i kept it in 3rd or 4th ? lust2luv
Worse I would have thought, you want to be in as high a gear as possible, as long as the car's not struggling.
chilli
I often go 1st, 3rd, 6th if I'm just going with traffic lol or 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th can't pull away in 2nd though, on-off clutch and it's not good for it anyway...

SuperSupra
I'm amazed that some people actually sit in 5th, or even 6th at 30mph! I'd be in 3rd if it's a short 30mph stretch, so I can accelerate quickly when it ends, or if it's a longer stretch of 30mph cruising, or I'm behind a tractor/learner/coffin dodger/twat, I'll stick it in 4th as it's unlikely I'll need any kind of great acceleration! Nick1980
I'm amazed I just read 3 pages of what gear people drive in at 30! WTF??

Ian C
4th gear @ 1800rpm An advanced driver wouldn't have to accelerate out the way of something suddenly -Ian
tbourner
The ABD say you should be in 3rd because the revs are higher; you are more likely to notice a change in engine noise and hence you are less likely to wander over the limit - this in turn means you don't need to check your speedo as often as you would do in 4th gear and therefore are more aware of your driving. toyotasuprauk
Pretty sure I'm always in 5th in a 30 zone. (5 speed box) Driving in 3rd would be mad, revs would be much too high.
RobSheffield
4th gear @ 1800rpm An advanced driver wouldn't have to accelerate out the way of something suddenly -Ian This was my thougt too...why do 'advanced drivers know that 4th is THE gear to be in?!' sounds like a load of crap to me, there is no perfect gear for speed. tbourner
why do 'advanced drivers know that 4th is THE gear to be in?!' Because it's safer (3rd) as I mentioned earlier.
