My ECU light keeps coming on and going off....apparently its the speed sensor? according to a local import specialist who linked it up to a computer. I posted before in the general section but got little response as to where i would be able to buy one of these bad boys and an indication of costing? mitchell Posted May 15, 2006 Author Share Posted May 15, 2006 Not exactly sure although the problem is not break related so am pretty sure its not the ABS sensor. Ewen Posted May 15, 2006 Share Posted May 15, 2006 Do some forum searching or wait for more advice from guys on here before you spend out on a new sensor...theres a few other faults (ie converter / delimiter) that can trigger warning light but show up in diagnostics as the speed sensor fault code....Im no expert but It cost me £220 to replace one of mine (TT) when code 42 came up (garage advised me to buy a new one ) and it didnt fix the problem. It may be the sensor, but I learnt that buying a new one isnt the best way to find out without checking a few other things first. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Max Headroom Posted May 15, 2006 Share Posted May 15, 2006 I seem to remember reading somewhere that the code 42 on your ECU can be rectified by fitting a delimiter. Im guessing that you still have the car limited to 112mph? 5upra Posted May 15, 2006 Share Posted May 15, 2006 When the lights come on, try whacking the top of the dash just above the odometer. If the lights go out when you whack it, you may have a simple fault with the wires which connect the odo to the sensor. I took my delimiter off ( it was wired to the speed sensor on the gearbox ) which helped a bit but the warning lights still come on but go off after whacking it. Ian C Posted May 16, 2006 Share Posted May 16, 2006 Usually what happens is that the import place has done a crap job of converting your speedo from kmh to mph, using scotchloks or some other bodge. This wrecks the speed signal and causes the code 42. Usually the wiring will have been done at the ECU or at the back of the odometer. mitchell Posted May 18, 2006 Author Share Posted May 18, 2006 Ok - I can understand the faults effecting the ECU light coming on and off but the cars revs are all over the place sometimes...it has cut out a couple of times when going along so points to something more complex than just a dodgy connection. Im pretty sure the car can go over 110mph although the clock still reads in Kph!!! The car ran fine with no alterations by anyone for about 8 months until this fault occured a few months back so its a new fault rather than one inherited.
