SupraStar 3000
I've noticed a few members reminiscing about the "good old days" of our club and how some technically minded members have left, and in their place a younger element has risen also introducing more and more none supra related threads, most of which in txt spk. So, I take it upon myself to highlight a good aspect of our current club. THE QUALITY OF THE CARS More and more high performance cars with the looks to die for owned and created by our members here. Have a look in the garages. Its a wealth of unique colours, kits, wheels and styles. More traders offering better products. Supras being built up and down the country in back gardens and garages ready to rip the drag strips to pieces. This can only be a good thing. or is it me looking through rose tinted testicals

Ewen
When I joined up , I was asked for a user name and e-mail address... I was not asked 'Are you a Chav ?; 'Do you intend to flood the forum with naff jokes and inane comments ?' 'Can you dissassemble and assemble a complete engine and ancilliary components whilst blindfolded ?' 'Do you intend to buy the cheapest Supra you can afford, cover it in superglue and drive it through the nearest Halfords superstore ?' Perhaps some should only be permitted to send in their tenner if the answers to the above are agreed by the forum founders ? Perhaps all Supras on the free market should be bought up by the forum and saved for real Supra enthusiasts ? There is a bit of snobbery on this site, and whilst I appreciate that the founding fathers original vision may have been infiltrated / diluted and possibly changed forever, its still a club with open membership and in my opinion, all the better for it. Hear hear!! :d And, let's face it guys and gals, text speak - like it or not - is fast becoming a part of the english language! Languages are dynamic - they are changed and adapted by society to meet the needs of that society (look at how Americans have simplified the spelling of many English words!!). It may not be 'correct' when viewed by someone with a more 'classic' education but it is non the less going to become an integral part of our language. Scoboblio
I know this has been done to death already, but IMO text speak is not English - it's crap. Unreadable lazy crap. Written by a lot of people who think it's fashionable to not be able to write properly. And I'm not an old man I'm

Or it may just be the speed of their internet connection...get it down and sent quick before the thread disappears into obscurity
ChrisSZ
I don't advocate it's use either and I do find it difficult to read, however, there are many people out there who can oly really communicate in the written format using this mode - they arenot all thick or illiterate - they have simply been educated (by society) differently. Text-speak was designed to suite text messages - where the main thing with kids seems to be to reply immediately and quickly. It can be sen as an electronic form of shorthand. It has it's place certainly, is a forum the correct place for it? I dunno :)

smithaldo
The ability to shorten words when space is limited is ok, but when you have no limits to the words that you can put then text speak is just plain lazy.

Class One
Text speak is fine on a mobile phone. There's a rationale behind it, as texts have a limited amount of characters per text, therefore a nearly whole new langauge has been created as a result of it, in order for users to get their point across without being out of pocket. However, on a forum, there's no place for it. Forum speak already has its' own abbreviations, which are in themselves a whole new langauge, some of which is also part of the text vocabulary. Its not snobbery to say "no text speak" its just very annoying to read on a forum!

CJ
there is defo that in this club In what sense do you perceive this? Class and social standing snobbery? Car related snobbery e.g TT v NA or J-spec v UK?
Ewen
Its not snobbery to say "no text speak" its just very annoying to read on a forum! If that was a reference to my use of the word snobbery, I was going deeper and darker than txt speak Im afraid. I didnt even mention txt speak in my original post. I refered to the undercurrent of disdain for those club members who have found they can now just afford what was once a high-end supercar, despite their tender years and inexperience when it comes to a pre-conceived ideal for what to and what not to bolt on to their cars. Those encouraged to join up and seek enlightenment within the forum, are frequently dismissed toward the search button when they ask a question. Snobbery takes many forms, and although Im slightly miffed myself when I see some young-un driving a car that I once thought was special and niche and expensive, bottom line is that they are not anymore. As I said before, whilst Supes are going for £3 k upward and this is an open membership club, club membership is going to continue in this direction. Its a cycle based on depreciation ....as with MkIII before, and in the future, LFA's.

Whitesupraboy2
when i joined all that time ago. I was, i think one of the very youngest at time on here to own a supra. I did notice it took time for some people to accept me on here, i use to notice people who would post in a thread ignoring my comment or people who would automatically disagree with anything i said. I was kinda lucky as in i joined before the big drop in prices, so it was a slightly different club then, but yea there is definatly some snobbery

jamesmark
...it just makes you appear like that. but maybe only in people with an element of social and educational snobbery! however its something that i honestly dont like but sometimes i use it, off hand i cant think if i have used it on here, but its not going to go away and moaning about it aint going to make it go away cause its not, if text speak was the only thing we had to worry about and have a problem with then life would be bliss, but we need to talk about it to be honest cause it lets other know other poeples feelings about it. i joined this forum for one goal and one goal only, to find out about the car that i love and to have a laugh and possible meet other people that share the passion, and enjoy my time here with some good banter and nonsense. a forum is a place for discussion and venting your feelings so that they are open for discussion and could possible be sorted out and if thats text speak then so be it, if its someone thats had a bad expierience with a trader then fair enough, and if its the sodding red button then they get the piss taken out of them, as when they have been here long enough they will also take the piss off a newbie, i have no problem telling people about the search button as some people do come on and just ask every question without abviously bothering, take neofuture (sorry mate no offence to you lol) he done this as there was loads of questions that the search button could have solved, but on the other side of the coin, if we did not have such people me included after advice cause we have not got a clue then all we woudl be left with is the NWS, bill prawns jokes and the odd group buy, everyones guilty of a little snobbery some just take it further than others.
