Handeling issues 19” +

Recommended Posts

I read on a number of occasions people saying that the handeling is ruid by going for 19" alloys.

Is this really the case - I mean fair enough if you were the stig and could really drive the car to its limits, but for the 'average' driver would they notice any real degrade of cornering, general handeling, etc?

I'm just wondering cause I keep seeing this Lambo ion Exmouth and it's got 19/20" wheels - But I'm sure that thing must handle fairly well.

Oh and I really want some new wheels, and want to go for 19's, but not if it's gonna shaft the handeling.

The Lambo's suspension would have been designed around this size wheel, so it's handling wouldn't be compromised.

Exactly!

I've ordered some 19" wheels, they'll look so nice.:)

Jamiep car is running a big single!!!!!!!! :D

I would get some more opinions first, from those who have 19" wheels would be good.

On a Supra...

19" all show and no go

18" show and go

17" not the best looking but best handling/performance

Considerations need to be made regarding tyre costs too as a 19" is quite a bit more then 17's or 18's

18's are the best option for looks and performance ;)

This is just my opinion though....

Ive got 19" on mine also and will have to agree with Jamiep my traction isnt the best but I dont have a problem with the handling at all. My Soop is lowered with stiffness adjustable shock ive set on hard it handles great, but then again ive never drove a soop with 17"s or 18"s on to compare but im quite happy with what ive got.

Apart from problems asociated with side wall flexing and that causing a reduction in tyre surface on road surface the other thing to be aware of is the weight of the wheel and the gyrosopic effects.

17's by their nature are lighter than 19's as there is less metal.

Think of the car's flywheel, a big heavy one takes time and alot of power to start spinning and then time and alot of force to slow down. Turn that into a wheel, and I found when I was running 19's that my 0-60 was slightly slower and the 60-0 braking times were slower too.

And due to the added weight on the wheels on the suspention the car was not handeling as well as it could or should. Because when spinning a gyroscope that is heavy takes effort to move the axel it is mounted on, where as a light on requires less effort. (This effect is why mortorcycle wheels have also become very light, as the heavy wheels affected the handeling and 'turn in time') So this will affect your ability to throw the car around and into and out of corners.

If I can find a set of 19's that weigh next to nothing then I would go for them, but until then I am sticking with my 17's for winter and track and looking to get a set of Weds 18's as they are LIGHT!

I had a set of chrome Mania Pasific's and they looked the nuts, but one wheel weighed almost the same as 2 17's. Not good.

i started with 17s then went to 18s, have now fitted 19s,and to be honest i have noticed no difference in handling, but the only time i will drive mine hard is on a straight road:)

i think you want advice form people that have been there and done it, i have 19's went from 17's to then 18's and then finally 19's yes theyre is a difference, its not as good as it was with 17's but in comparrision to the 18's i had, i honestly have not noticed a difference, and i dont drive like an old lady, i do have coilovers too and this has helped greatly, theres alot of anti 19" members many of who have not even had 19's on theyre car, if you go for the correct offsets, correct tryre size, suspension, light weight then honestly speaking mate it'll be fine,

believe it or not by 19's were lighter than my advan 17's, strange.

now for trackdays just keep a set of 17's.

Yeah, if you're a track fanatic just keep hold of your 17s, at least that way you wont mess up your nice wheels if you chose to go with 19s :)

I've got 18s here and there is a big difference in daily driving feel, its not nice with lots of tramlinning etc, but thats probably because I'm running with 255s and 285 tyres, comfort wise its a little more harsh but around a track it felt solid.

19" can create some serious cornering forces, it all goes wrong when you have std bushes, they compress too much and your geometry goes to places it shouldnt. If you want 19" i'd fit TRD bushes or the like, and then totally reset the geometry. Less neg camber (zero at rear) pull the castor forward, and give it a little more toe out and things ought to be getting there.
