Oil behind air filter! Serious?

Jspec TT with stock airbox and filter.

Just had my filter off and behind it in the bottom of the back of the airbox (the bit where it narrow up toward that big pipe) was what appears to be an oily residue.

It doesn't smell very oily but had that golden sheen to it.

Is this gonna be some bad news about the tubbies or something?

but he wud have smoke?

That's what I thought, so I left my car running for over a year with oil pissing out the BOV and pouring down the induction pipes.

It turns out the oil had been leaking past a bearing in one of the turbos and in this situation, there's no smoke. (I don't know too much engines, so I'm only repeating the information and advice I was given.) The longer you run a car in this state, the more damage you will be doing. I had to have the head stripped. When I first told people on here, they all said I was being led astray, but after seeing the pictures, most people agreed that this was the right thing to do.

I'm not saying it's all bad. I'm just saying that you should probably get a professional to take a look earlier rather than later...

(The upside is that this gave me an excuse to go hybrids!!)

I'm back. Took an emergency visit to my trusted mechanic.

He say, in summary, "worry not, Martin, you are truly the king of panic".

Basically, oil in induction pipe os okay. IIRC he said (and I know I won't use the right words) that the oil comes from the crank case something or other as a fine mist which condenses in the cold air from the air box and goes liquidy and when the car cools it settles as an oily residue.

Or something.

I should change my air filter though.
