buy new shims, were the HKS cams a long way out?

BTW I know Mark at Phoenix has a load of 2.5mm as someone's car is with him, and the tuner, has installed 2.5mm shims in every bucket...

So what you saying Terry some tuner has fitted 2.5mm shims without even checking tolerances?

LOL yeah but they clearly think all the shims should be the same size. It sounded like a bag of nails!

Is it advisable to surface grind standard shims to gain correct tolerances for valve adjustment? ...

I'd never do this.

You risk accelerated wear of the shim later on, or (worst case scenario) a shattered shim.

Brrrrrr.......

It's also best to measure clearances *after* valve seats etc have been cleaned, lapped and the like.

In some cases lapping can lead to the need for a different shim (valve moves closer to the cam)

Have them double-check valve clearances *again* after the new shims are in place.

You never know.

Clearances that are abnormally small can lead to burnt valves later on.
