Onelife Nofear
I know You have probably answered all these questions before but i am still just getting use to the search facility and still cant find the answers From reading the other post on de-catting got the following questions. I know a front pipe replaces the 2nd cat but where abouts is the first cat? And what does a restrictor ring do? and why would i might need one? Sorry if these are dumb ass questions
Chase
the front pipe replaces the first cat which is just below the turbos (you can see it if you look under the bonnet). The second cat is underneath the car about half way along as far as I know... (Waits to be corrected). A restrictor ring *might* need to be used if you find you are over boosting after a de-cat. It just adds a restriction to help increase back pressure.

Onelife Nofear
thanks guys, oooh me is starting to understand but slowly lol Whats the indication of overboosting then?
outatime
Unless you get a boost gauge, your only indication will be the turbos dying. Anything over 1.2bar is out of the stock turbos efficient range and the heat created is likely to kill them eventually.
ChrisR
Originally posted by Onelife Nofear thanks guys, oooh me is starting to understand but slowly lol Whats the indication of overboosting then? Best way to check is on a boost gauge, 1.2 BAR or 18PSI is considered a max safe limit for stock turbos.
Onelife Nofear
SO best indication is the needle on the boost gauge that you really need before hand ok wouldnt a Boost controler stop overboosting then?

A boost controller can only raise boost, a full decat will put you at the upper limits of the turbos. Some people have 1 cat out and use a b/c to reach the required level of boost... Bear in mind that insurance companies may refuse to insure a car with a boost controller
Supragal
You'll need an FCD too!

Onelife Nofear
cool thanks, So a front down pipe replaces one cat what replaces the other a full exhaust with intermediate?
Terminator
You can get one pipe to replace both cats I believe, most people use two pipes so that the smaller rear most cat can be popped back in at MOT time. Chris Wilson on this BBS makes and sells them in SS very good quality. From the second cat back you have a range of options as big as your wallet. IMHO you don't need a boost controller on JDM decatted car on stock turbos, just use one of Chris Wilsons restrictor rings to keep boost below 1.2bar, spend the money on bigger injectors. If you have a UK car you will need a boost controller even with a very free flowing decatted system.
Grazer
How much are the CW decat pipes and is it a DIY job for someone with basic to moderate car tinkering skills??
Steve W2
Originally posted by Grazer How much are the CW decat pipes and is it a DIY job for someone with basic to moderate car tinkering skills?? You should PM Chris Wilson about he he has a standard 'speil' that he sends out thats answers all your question abouts prices etc. If you can get under the car its very easy to do, for the hassle an effort though I just paid my local garage £10 to fit my cat back Nur spec system. Took 15 mins on a ramp.
SimonB
Apparently the bolts on the first cat can be a right sod to get off, and it looks very awkward, so like Steve I just got someone to do it.
