Paul
Just found this thread Rosie, so sorry mate, looked a gorgeous horse. You'll never forget him and making that decision is the last thing you can do for him, difficult though. As you know I lost my dog a couple of weeks back and although it's getting very slightly easier I still miss the little guy like f*ck, I'm existing at the moment without him rather than living, silly but animals mean so much to us. Supragal
Thanks mate, I think it's worse with animals in some way as at least people understand death and theres rarely a situation where you have to choose to euthanise a person. Whereas with an animal that trusts you, to lead it to it's death is harsh.
black cat
Injection can be far more traumatic for the horse. They can't always administer enough in one go so they have to do a series of injections, which can result in a drowzy horse panicking and struggling while not really being in control of their legs etc- not at all pretty. At least with a bullet it's instant. Plus injections are usually done in the stable by a vet so you have to deal with that, then get someone to come and remove the body... imagine the logistics of getting a half ton body out of a stable door... not easy especially if rigamortis has set in which it does in a couple of hours. They are shot outside so they just winch them into the back of a truck and take them away. this doesnt sound much comfort to me:( :( ... infact it sound horrific..!! i hope you didnt see any of this?? i think it would haunt me for years. hope you feel better soon. Supragal
no, you just take them over, hand them over, say good bye and walk away. they give you a few mins then when you hear the gun shot you know it's all over. stupidly loud. you can hear the winch etc. then you go back and collect the headcollar once they are gone. I'm sure you could stay if you wanted.

Gerry
I've had a number of dogs that have been very old and knackered (bit like me) and in one case injured, and I think all that we owe any animal that we care for, is as good a life as we can provide and a quick death without stress. Shooting doesn't sound pretty, but it's effective and very quick - what happens immediately after doesn't matter a jot to the animal. Sounds like Rosie's putting the horses welfare first, as I would expect, it's a very sad time no matter how it ends, I feel for you Rosie. Words can't explain I had to inject my own dog a few years ago (he came to me middle of the night and told me he had had enough) Tore my heart out..... Was quick though. Less than 10 seconds (horse injection).
